There are some nonsensical limits to economic integration.

I wish you guys could get that pipeline built from Alberta to the west coast of BC.
Alberta's WCS (West Canadian Select) heavy oil is trading at a heavy discount.
And my shares in Cardinal Energy took a dump late last year.
That's how you become a long term investor. Waiting for the stock to recover.

I know, if Keystone XL (Phase IV) were built it wouldn't be a problem.
Texas refineries would be glad to take that heavy crude.
But production caps and shipping oil by rail are no solutions.

 

There are virtually no 18's left. There was one blazing blue sport left in the country when I inquired and they wanted $2000 to freight it in from some small town Toyota dealership ... might have been in Juno Alaska... lol

They keep replacing them on 10+ yr old trucks for free though, would that not give customers some comfort knowing they’ll be looked after. The big 3 would laugh and point at your 10 year old rusty frame.

 

I don't think that's a Plymouth horizon I think that is the Dodge variant however that might be how they do it in Canada...

 

well I am still in wait for the power seats and 20 model. Wish it would hurry and get here !

I base any loan I take out based on this. Rates are terrible everywhere right now .

 

I have a buddy that owns a couple of dealerships in Southern Alberta. In short all sales locally are way down and he’s doing better than the guys up North. Fleet sales are still okay, I mean big companies are setup to renew their fleets are regular intervals and don’t change that unless they have to, but the contract workers and small business owners who make up the bulk of Alberta truck sales aren’t buying. Even worse, the down oil prices are killing sales in the service industry which is where a lot of CUV and small truck sales come from. My wife and I bought a Ford Edge a few months ago for almost 5 digits off MSRP. That’s unheard of and the economy is to blame for it.

 

It’s all the third gen drivers complaining on this forum.

 

In Dec/2018 the USA exported more oil than it imports, that market for us might be slowing down.

It was a joke when Toyota was still charging 4.9% for a loan over 60 months on a Tacoma and people were buying them like hot cakes. The Tacoma is easily a $45K truck, if not more, now a finance charges on a loan at 4.9% are gut wrenching.

 

At first I thought you were crazy but sure enough 40k financed for 84 months at 5% is $7,500 in interest over the life of the loan. I feel bad for the people that sign for silliness like that.

 

Yes, mostly WTI (West Texas Intermediate). Light, sweet (low sulfur).
There's plenty of that, and it trades at a discount to North Sea Brent, the global benchmark.

Heavier grades, like WCS, are gonna be in shorter supply.
Venezuelan and Iranian exports are down, and those are heavy crudes.
So is most of the crude in the voluntary OPEC+ cutbacks.

The thing is, what refineries can produce is pretty much predetermined by the grade of feedstock.
WTI will give something like 47 percent gasoline and 30 some percent middle distillates like diesel.
Heavy crudes are variable, but skew more towards middle distillates like diesel and marine gasoil, then lubricants.

The new IMO (International Maritime Org) fuel standards come into effect in 2020.
The standards mandate a reduction in sulfur content from 3.5% to 0.5%.
Marine gasoil is obtained from refinery residues and/or blended with middle distillates.

It's a big deal, shipper use a lot of fuel in those huge container ships.
They're gonna have to:
A) Install expensive scrubbers.
B) Switch to diesel. Easiest to do but more expensive than the old marine gasoil.
or
C) Modify their boilers to use straight sweet crude like WTI. WTI contains something like 0.26% sulfur.
I dunno how expensive that is to do, but supposedly it can be done.

I just wrote that from memory and didn't check the details.
But you get the picture.

Anyway, Canada is missing a golden opportunity.
It seems like that heavy crude may soon be in short supply and command a premium.
It's not pinching just yet, with worries about recession and global demand.
But oil is a notoriously volatile commodity. At some point, it's gonna spike.
