Love it when people shoot these one-handed in a film.

That’s because a 22 to the head will bounce around inside, turn the brain into scrambled eggs and make a minimal mess.

Israeli’s stopped using the .22 back in the 70’s. They would have to literally pump someone’s chest with a bunch of rounds. .22 isn’t the round you want to assonate someone with. If I ever get shot I only hope and pray it’s with a .22.

It’s a fun and cheap round, to plink and target shoot. Let’s just leave it at that

I’m sure it’s been mentioned but I didn’t feel like reading 4 pages...

Take her to rent a few handguns, then find out what she’s most comfortable with.

I'll be the odd one out and say that I don't think a Glock, or anything without an external safety is a good choice for a first pistol. For an experienced marksperson it's a different story.
A good first pistol imo is a GSG Firefly/ Walther P22, or similar 22.

38 revolver. Enough kick to give her a sense of what's she's getting into and minimal happening mechanically to confuse her on the very basic mechanics of shooting.

Late to this party, but you’ve got to start with a 22 pistol. We had a foreign exchange student staying with us and she wanted to experience the American west in every way she could. We took her to the desert, mountains, horse riding, and what’s more muricun than shooting guns. So, we took her to the shooting range. Things got a little out of control because my son, and his two marine buddies came with us and to say that crew are gun nuts is an understatement. At this point I’m concerned she will get the wrong idea, be intimidated or scared by the whole thing. And the male clowns were like “let’s start her on a Desert Eagle.” I put my credit card down for the "all you can rent" option and gave them something to do while I took her aside and started with my 22 Ruger Mark III. I went through the gun safety rules, showed her how to handle the gun, and put the target about 10’ down range. The first shot she ever fired in her life was on the target and she was thrilled. After about 30 rounds of 22 I got the biggest, heaviest 9mm in the rental case. I wanted her to feel some recoil but I also didn’t want to scare her with some snappy little concealed carry gun. Then I bumped her up to a 45 1911 style gun.

And, then the clowns got into the party and they had her shooting practically every gun in the rental case, including the Desert Eagle. It cost me a couple hundred dollars in ammo, gun rental and range fees, and it was the most fun I’ve ever had at a gun range. I highly recommend it

I can’t aay whether or not they “stopped” using it, but NATO ammunition for rifles are .556 which is the metric equivalent of the .22 or more correctly know as the .223 standard measurement of the rifle ammunition the M-4 carbine rifles uses.

You may be referring to the .22 “squirrel type” shot that is commonly found in sports stores/Wal-Mart. And yes, that ammo would be hard-pressed to kill someone.

However, many many people have been easily killed with “.22” ammo by the U.S. military and it’s allies. It’s based on the grain/casing size, not just the bullet itself.

Big difference between .22 LR and .223 or .556. Some call them pissed off .22’s. The diameter along with the way great volicity makes it a nice penetrating round.

Diameter may be the same but there’s a huge difference in the cartridge. You can’t say that because .223 is effective so must be .22lr

22lr is a good start, but like others have said, pistol, rifle, shotgun? Intended purpose? Age and any medical problems (arthritis, etc)?

Stepping up from a 22, if you ever do, I'd avoid smaller guns. Lots of gun stores push them on women, but honestly, a heavy gun soaks up recoil better. And if you're looking at a semi auto pistol at some point, see that she can rack the slide (consistently, and with her finger off the trigger) before you buy it.

Then spend some money on quality instruction, not just Bubba that was in the Army that lives down the road.

4 long pages and the OP hasn’t been back since the OP.

    All that advice for naught.

A 5.56 NATO projectile leaves the barrel a minimum 2500 fps faster than the hottest .22 LR of the same grain. There's no comparison.

When people talk about .22 they are talking about rimfire 99.99% of the time.
