If you're changing your oil before 5K with a synthetic, you're wasting money. I can't belive the amount of folks here who use Mobil 1 or any other brand synthetic and still go with a 3K OCI.. Talk about creatures of habit. Exxon, Mobil, Shell, BP and all other oil producers deep pockets love you guys.

Waste of money and oil to do 3k especially with syn. This is 2010 and not 1950. Some people are living in the past.
Falling for the oil company, dealer, and oil change places advice is stupid.
I have never had an engine problem due to oil failure in fifty years of vehicle use.
Keep feeding the oil companies and wasting resources if you must with your 3k intervals.

I purchased a 2010 Dc tacoma one of the purchase "incentive" was free schedualed maintenace. The dealer has said that Toyota has changed the actual oil change interval to 10K miles due to the vehicles having sythetic oil. But they will still need to check the oil at 5K and due a tire rotation.

That's where it's mostly at when extending OCI's that far...the addie pack. M1's also shown to be good out there (the 0WXX grades) but I'd never get away with doing it (and so don't care to explore it) for no other reason than I'd never get through the annual emissions inspection unless I let him change oil.

It's the annual bend-over-and-take-it ritual every car owner in Philly area gets to enjoy.

Oil is cheap. Change it whenever you want.

They said the same thing about gasoline 20 years ago....now look where we're at. If everyone keeps the same wasteful attitude in regards to oil, think where we'll be in another 20 years.

Change mine every three months with basic 5W30. My trips are usually short distance but through rush-hour traffic, so it works out to only about 1900 mi between oil changes.

3k interval is a waste of money. go with the 5k interval or switch to synthetic and go longer

To be fair, driving habits drive this more. My 3000GT VR-4 I changed every 2500-3000 with full synthetic. It's also twin turbo, and I red-lined it every day. Track days, most people change before and after and I drove it nearly as hard as that. Oil is cheap, rebuilding is not.

I have NEVER had a power train failure on any Toyota I've owned. The only warranty work I've ever needed was a cruse control that wouldn't up shift, a CD player that wouldn't play and a stuck shade on the sun roof, that's it. Like I said, I do follow the maintenance schedule while under warranty just in case.

Wow, seriously... an oil change is SOOOO CHEAP and it insures the life of your engine! Every 3,000, but never more than 5,000... at the dealership, no question about service or warantee problems later on!

In 1997 Consumer Reports tested lube oil. They put rebuilt 4.6 V-6s in Chevy Caprices use in a NYC taxi fleet. They changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles or 6000 miles to test the difference. At the end of the test period there was NO DIFFERENCE in wear in the engines that had the 3000 mi. interval vs the 6000 mi. interval (I don't remember the total mileage). Motor oil has only gotten better since then with improved additives and better filters.
Oil is cheap, but we have to buy it from countries that hate us and want to kill us, take out property and use our wives and children as slaves.

eh just open it at 5 and if its not that dirty then wait longer. If its super dirty then do it earlier. Only you know your driving conditions and the fluid inside your vehicle. I think the containers say 3k but i mean if you were selling a consumable product wouldnt you want it to say as often as possible without hurting your rep.
