I only half read the first page of posts before commenting. I went from a first gen 2.7l 4x4 manual extended cab to a 3rd gen DCSB automatic. The 3rd gen is easier to drive in many ways, and it fits my life with two growing kids and a lot of scout activities. But there is just something missing when I drive now. Maybe I need more to do when I drive? I really enjoy the control I had of a manual transmission, especially knowing when and how to make the back end brake loose and control it. In general, I think there is a fun factor in everyday driving with a manual you can't always get with an AT.

My .02, please don't hate, this just my opinion, it's ok if you don't agree.

Double clutch is completely unnecessary on any consumer-based MT made after like 1975.

    Why a manual transmission?
For me, it’s just because I enjoy driving it. There’s really no other reason why I bought a manaul.

I really think it all depends on how often you intend to drive and where you live. Anyone that's lived in hilly areas with a manual transmission or sits in tons of traffic, it gets so old it ain't even funny.

With modern electronics, one can merely set the radar cruise control with lane departure alert and all they need to do is steer. When I have to drive 60 miles on the freeway it's a blessing to have an automatic and all the electronic doodads. I can check up on email and browse this forum.

I also hate to admit that I was pretty impressed with a rental car we had in California that was a Nissan versa. It had a CVT but it was so seamless and it seemed to have unlimited power... I guess I am a pussy.

Seriously though, there's a reason why the automatics get better fuel economy than the manual....

Its way cheaper to replace pads and rotors than it is to replace piston rings, clutches, and transmission parts.

I’ve taken several Toyota trucks over 200k miles and never replaced a clutch, ring, or a transmission part, except for when the 3.0 blew up (which Toyota replaced fo FREE) @ 115k miles.

On the 3rd gen, it’s ~$1800 cheaper with a manual which will pay for a lot of parts.

Wife and I spent all of July '17 in The UK. For the duration of the "car hire" it was $1,000 cheaper to rent a manual instead of a auto.

One big gripe that has been beat to death is the tall reverse gear in the MT. I would be weary using it to back up a trailer as even backing into parking spots I find myself slipping the clutch more than I would like. I have heard tale of a 2Lo mod but am not sure if that's available for 3rd gens yet. If using a trailer is something you plan on doing often, it might be a factor to consider!

The perplexed look of the dealers at the Toyota in Manhattan was worth getting the manual in and of itself.

Predator steps, TRD cat-back, lots of orange stickers.
For the record, Mazda quite recently sold a manual minivan (Mazda5). I'd own one if I needed a minivan.
Love, LOVE my manual Taco. There's the rarity thing to it, I've always been drawn to that. Plus I'd get bored driving an automatic.
