I bumped up to Mobil-1 when I got this Taco about a month ago. 160k on the clock and I'm shooting for this one to be my first quarter million club. Took several to 200k+ with dino @ 3k all my life. Going to 5k on this one, which is a huge step for an old fart set in his ways...:D

I'm at 175k with my 12,500 mile oil changes. Going to make it to 300k easy.

I wonder how many guys get their oil tested more often than they get their blood tested...

Just do what the owner’s manual says and enjoy your truck...

If you're doing it yourself you can get everything you need at Walmart for like $40. I've been doing mine Mobil 1 Full Synthetic every 5,000mi. I also grease the drive shafts at the 5k mark and I don't worry about the truck being weird. I was just on a 1,750mi road trip with my wife and went over the service interval by 1,000mi. But I don't worry about it because the oil can do 15k.

Keep in mind that the 2nd gen trucks were designed in like the late 90's or early 2000's, their systems are 5,000mi systems. Plus it's a nice round even number. It only takes a few minutes and doesn't cost much so you could push it to 7,500 or even 10,000 but I do it every 5 and I drive my truck however I want. Seems to be fine.

Even with Mobil 1 full syn, i still always do 5k miles with OEM filter.

Over 300,000 miles, the extra cost of doing mobil 1 ful syn at 5k miles instead of 10k is all of around 400 bucks (you can usually find a 5qt jug for 12ish bucks after mail in rebate). 400 bucks extra over 300k miles for peace of mind... yeah ill take that.

My 2012 Owners Manual said 5,000mi or 6 month. Then about 2 years ago (maybe more) a Toyota Bulletin on my Owners webpage we said if I use 0W-20 full Synthetic I'm ok to 10,000mi or 12 months. So now I'm doing 10,000mi on 0W-20 full synthetic. And I use Mobil 1.

    4cyl?

There is a lot of dispute on the bulletins. The FJ uses 0w20.

The latest I’ve seen have shown 1gr-fe to still spec 5w30 conventional.

I'm new to the Taco world. A mechanic friend of mine that has a 2005 Taco changes his oil every 5K with Mobil 1 full synthetic. I had my first oil change done on my 2015 at the dealer and they told me every 10K using Mobil 1 full synthetic. I'm at about 6K miles in since that first oil change. I might change it tomorrow and send a sample to Blackstone.

I'm at 10k intervals now. Been sending my oil to Blackstone for years and they've continually told me to increase the mileage between changes. Zero problems on the motor.

I recently went from 7k miles up to 8k miles interval using Mobil 1 and premium filters. This interval is based on light service, easy driving habits with frequent highway runs, and overall clean condition of the engine. I suspect it can go much further, like 10-12k miles between oil/filter changes. But since Toyota recommends 5k on conventional oil, then 8k is pretty close to my comfort limit with synthetic oil. We will see how the next few runs turn out... someday I might try 10k just for giggles and see if it blows up LOL.

Then yes, 0W-20 is the current spec.

I use Mobil 1 also and put on 3-4K a year on the truck so I change the oil every 12 months.

Do you notice after 10k that you have to add any?

Not who you addressed, but I’ll give you another data point - I have not added any oil to my truck, ever. 5 3/4 quarts per change (upsized fram ultra 3600). Dipstick level doesn’t move if measured under consistent conditions.

My lawn mower gets its oil changed more frequently than most as a result :)

Toyota says 5k, the manual does NOT specify conventional or syn oil. It says 5k, basically the same time you rotate tyres, change the oil. Pretty easy and simple, and my 15 still has factory warranty on the power train.

    Rule of thumb, RTFM

Again, do as you like it is YOUR truck.

I do the 5k and sometimes sooner.
    Oil is cheap insurance.

Even the guys at Mobil say follow the mfg recommendations.

The 3 and 3 of 20 yrs ago is not really valid on vehicles built after 95.
