Trailer rehab project started this week. Stripped the old rotten wood and finished all new wiring Sunday.

Picked up supplies and cut about 80% of the metal for a trailer bed. Other than the exp mesh steel, I have enough scrap to make all the braces. Paid $70/4'x8' sheet for the metal. Its a 6.5' x 10' tilt bed trailer and I can get by with only 2 sheets. I bought one extra for later. It''s some heavy gauge stuff. No sure what the term is for thickness on this type metal. Vendor just had samples from which to choose. Got it right off the delivery truck, no rust and no primer/paint.

I have a Hobart 150 that I'll be using. I am running the sheets across, even though 8' dimension of the sheets running with 10' of the trailer would be easier. Running it across gives better traction when you drive mowers or whatever up on the trailer.

BTW, this is a perfect sized trailer for the average guy. I have an 18' tandem w/winch, but one this size is really handy for normal stuff.

I just turned the welder way down. 15.5v and 210 wire speed with 035 wire. Seemed to work pretty well.

Do you think it would've been easier with 023 wire?

Way friggin easier. But that’s what was in the welder and it wasn’t worth swapping it out for the one and only time it’d be used for sheet metal. It was the welder at mobtowns shop that I was using, so normally used on that T H I C C steel.

To me, its just not worth it to waste time switching wire. Any body work will be mostly a series of tack welds that will get ground down anyways. I just taught myself to use .035 for everything. There really is no need to "carry a bead". If you can run a continuous bead, good on you. I usually have warping issues if i run a long bead.

Usually the weld is in a piss poor location and you cant even see what you need to weld anyways.

    Randy has the right idea.

I'm just not going to over think it.

Now if you were only doing body work, then yes, switch to the thinner wire.

So accurate. I’m very thankful the truck was on a post lift, so I could stand under it while I finished the bottom up. Woulda been a huge pain without it.

Nice thing about sheet is you always get good penetration ;)
Built all these out of 24ga black (plus another 14 units) with a mig so I understand your pain.
It was a 110v with smaller wire so that helped.

Bags are packed and I was gonna start my drive to Maine tomorrow when they show me this while doing my hiring in paperwork. Apparently they forgot to give me 3 more test. They want me to just knock em out in a couple hours tomorrow so we can get my results in time to start driving to the job. F. M. L.
