    @ebulang

    Just looking through some old 2nd Gen posts, I saw @nwilli10 has changed on 4.0L.

    Don't forget to check your valve clearances while you have the covers off.

    So... I know this thread is about doing it yourself.. but did anyone get a quote from a shop for replacing the VCG?

    What can I expect a little Toyota shop to charge for this. I'm seeing anything from $350-$700 online

    This is a great write up. I see you know when to use Permatex Black vs. when NOT to use Ultra Grey. On that, I'm sure this gasket job will last for many years to come.

    So I'm gonna do new VCG in the next few days. It's no fun having a cloud of smoke pouring out from under the hood. I got a gasket kit from ebay. I know it's in this thread someplace but it's late and i'm too lazy to scroll back. Do I use the BLACK or the GREY? Probably will do the plugs too, since I have no idea when they were last done. Any thoughts on which to use? And of course, any advice from you guys is why I love this place!!

    When it comes to the Cam Shaft plugs, is it necessary to put RTV sealant around the plug where it seats OR only on the points indicated in the manual?

    I imagine the plug serves that purpose already but my overly cautious mind asks the question.

    Amazing write up! Doing the job this weekend...

    Have an oil leak under the hood, my limited research is pointing to this. Normally would be “fighting above my class” mechanically but this site and Timmy the tool man YouTube video have given me confidence to eventually get into the guts on this. Great post

    Two days for me for sure. Pics, labels, couple pages of notes and diagrams to get it back together. That seems like the hardest part, make sure everything goes back on right.

    Do these spark plug seals have an outer metal rim?

    I see there is a metal rim and was pulling on it then though maybe thats part of the valve cover and just screwed up that metal rim.
    The old seal is just falling apart as I pull on it

    So everything went well until I couldn't get the last half moon loose.
    So I wiggled it side to side,
    Yup the lip edge of the half moon broke.

    Good news is I used a dremel with an extension and a wire wheel and it made short work of cleaning the cam plug and half moon
    old gasket on the motor and the parts
