Agreed. The OP's description was vague enough to include the offerings Toyota does have. Full time 4WD would fit what he described in the original post as I believe he just wants the ability to use 4WD all the time.

Isn’t VSC standard now? Wouldn’t that be a safer option to slippery or icy conditions?

Yep, and it uses a clutch similar to a motorcycle.
No gear mesh. So, as the clutch plates wear, you lose power to the front wheels. Better off with fulltime 4wd, and a center diff.
That system is NOT superior to a regular tcase.

I would turn auto 4x4 off if my truck had it. Pretty useless, approaching detrimental, feature really.

Uggghh!!!!! God no!!!!! To many reasons to list. Banish full-time “auto” 4WD to the dark pit in which it belongs.

I'm just trying to envision a time when I would need the truck to turn 4x on instantly. It already has vsc and traction control. If I'm gonna be going on ice/snow or off road I just turn it on.

Had a gmc envoy with auto 4x4...never really used it because..well, it needs to lose traction before engaging, not ideal on snow or ice to lose control and then engage 4x4...just stick it in there when needed. ..You know when it’s engaged and when it’s not and for me anyways, there is much greater confidence in the system the way Toyota designed it

I believe people have an irrational fear of hitting pavement while in 4hi. Like, have these people not considered the incredible strain placed on the drivetrain when you are crawling up a rocky ledge in 4lo, with one or both wheels coming in and out of traction, and yet the Tacoma survives?

A little tire scrub on a rainy street in 4hi is not going to grenade your taco. Watch the video below and think of the strain on the CVs, driveshafts, carrier bearings, and transfer case, amplified by the fact he’s running locked/locked and huge tires.

That patch of dry pavement you are stressing over is just a fart in a windstorm

All Land Cruisers sold in US since 1991 are full time 4wd. Quite a brilliant setup, not a pickup truck, tho.

I’ll take auto 4wd any day. There is a 2wd only selection if you don’t want to use it. 4wd auto is great in the winter

I’ve had a Silverado with “auto 4wd”. The second of being out of control before the front wheels kicked in kept me from using it. Great idea, poor implementation.
