It depends on the airport. Some airports don’t give a shit about what you do in the hangar, some do. I looked harder into the stipulations for my regional airport and it turns out you need a working and airworthy aircraft as proven by service logs. What I said earlier about any aircraft applied to most regional airports, some are more or less strict than others.

Also I just realized after reading some aviation forums the waiting list for some Bay Area airports are 5+ years, and my local one looks like it had a LONG waiting list.

You can claim an airport fuselage as an aircraft by saying it’s a project. Some airports only stipulate you must use it for aviation use primarily, and this can be done by having an airplane, a glider, an experimental aircraft, etc.

Try asking around some flying clubs and asking to lease unused space in hangars.

Oh how I envy your cheap real estate. They’d charge around $1,500-$2,000 a month for that here in the Bay Area.

Do look into airplane hangars though. Look for local regional airports that have openings and read into their stipulations.

 

Why do you say that, out of curiosity? All I can think of is just not having three phase. 110 Amps seems plenty for running a lift, and basic shop tools.

 

We have somewhat affordable light commercial... in Stockton.

Welding, cutting, some drill presses/mills/lathes etc. I doubt the landlord is gonna let any joe wire up a 240 volt circuit

 

What’re you planning on doing?

A popular real estate option is sharing a big warehouse. We have a big abandoned Navy base on Alameda island called Alameda Point. Was closed in 1995 and the U.S. Government finally gave it back to the city a few years ago.

If you’ve seen any commercial, TV show, or movie that takes place in the Bay Area some scene were probably shot on one of the runways. Mythbusters, Tesla, Toyota, GM, Fast and the Furious, etc etc. You get a great view of the San Francisco skyline.

Anyway, they rent out the massive hangars per square foot. Usually it’s $2.00 for most commercial spaces. Too rich for my blood. One hangar is a brewery, one is a car auctioner, one is an office park, etc.

 

Yes but are the recepticles already there? Most of those rent a shops wont let you run your own circuits

 

Isn’t 110 Amps just the limit of the electrical service? I’m pretty sure these light commercial places will have 240v service. Most houses have 240v service.

 

Yeah fair enough. Think my Miller is rated at 80A/100A or something.

 

What do you do exactly?

 

The miller 252 at my job is 3 phase.

 

If you’re not doing crazy welding or machining then I think basic 110A service is fine. But you’re right that is a limiting factor.
