That clutch pedal sensor to start sure needs to be pushed down a lot. I've noticed that when I'm not paying attention.

I'd check that battery for sure. The battery warning light is normal when you have the ignition on.

If it all checks out it could be that sensor.

He said it is cranking so that's not the issue.

That's absolutely what's happening. It adds fuel to try to raise the idle to keep you from stalling...so when it eventually does stall there is excess fuel in the combustion chamber (that's being flooded).

Please go talk to your local Toyota master tech for details.

Carbeurated engines are not the only ones that can flood...FFS.

OP clearly stated that he can take the key out, and then put it back in and it fires right back up. It's not flooding.

Happened to me a few times. Mainly when offroading and trying to go in reverse. That gear is extremely high. Not sure why it takes so long to restart but it is annoying.

I agree. Crank with the throttle wide open and try to clear the flood.

Even fuel injected engines can get loaded up in a stall situation and make a restart difficult. My kid's 2000 Tacoma does it. My 2016 Porsche does it. Holding the throttle down in some vehicles does initiate a "clear flood" function wherein fuel is cut off and only air enters the chamber in an attempt to get the mixture right enough for ignition.

I haven’t seen that. One time it started after waiting a minute but had an irregular idle for a moment.

Thanks. Just seems odd. I’ve had several cars and manual trucks and any time they have stalled they just start back up. Zero issue. Taught my wife to drive my ranger and she stalled a bunch. Always just started again. No issue.

Come on. Obviously. Even someone who never stalls on the street can have a stall on a difficult trail or slow, steep, rocky climb.

Asking for insight on the behavior. Want my wife to get back in the seat with a MT and not being able to start after a stall will freak her out and make her not want to drive it. Don’t want that. Just want to know how to handle the situation when it arises.

Thanks. It’s at least good to hear it happens to others. It’s just very strange to me. Never seen it on another vehicle.

I've driven a co-workers 3rd gen MT a dozen times now and I will admit that I stalled it the first time I went to take off (cranked right back up though)...what I quickly learned is that these trucks like to be revved when taking off, a low RPM or light throttle take off is not ideal, in my experience.

did you hear anything when you tried to crank the engine after stall? This happened to me when I just got my Taco. Finally I figured out the reason. I put a new floor mat that has no hole to hook the position and it got moved to the bottom of the clutch. When I tried to quickly start the engine after stall, I tended not to push the clutch hard enough. It seems Tacoma's clutch likes to be pushed all the way down into the carpet to have the engine start that is strange. Maybe this is the reason, esp, if you heard nothing when you cranked it.

There are switches a both ends of the pedal travel. But if I am not mistaken, if the pedal is not completely pushed, the engine won't even crank.

That’s weird. Wouldn’t think it’s a safety thing. Were you moving? Maybe it sees you are not stopped and Toyota thinks is unsafe to restart a moving vehicle?
