Just noticed the howl noise in my new 2019 DCSB OR.It has less than 3K on it. Speed 54-56MPH going downhill and feathering throttle. Should I open a case with toyota? Is there a final fix for the issue? Looks like this thing has been going on for a while.

First of all, welcome aboard. Second, there is no absolute fix. Third, yes, by all means please open a case. Maybe if enough people complain they'll finally get a real fix.

Definitely open a case with Toyota. I'm guessing your truck already has the TSB parts from the factory (they told me my August 2018 build did, so I assume 2019's do too). But take it in to a dealer to make sure. I traded my 2018 at a loss after 2 months because the noise drove me nuts. Pissed me off.

Sorry, man. Totally sucks that they haven't figured this out yet. Not much you can do about it. Sometimes they're willing to throw a new rear diff in, sometimes they're not. Seems to be a crap-shoot.

Can't believe there isn't a class action suit on this yet. Some of those that have had the diff removed have reported metal on the magnet and badly worn gears.

Know you're not alone! There's a bunch of us that also dropped $39k and are feeling the same way you do right now.

    A few.
When reading through the list of tsb's, I thought i saw the fix for this problem was them replacing the leaf springs and doing something inside the back of the cab?

That’s a bandaid to mask the noise. I have that TSB as well and my last diff could be heard over my radio set on 35 with Kicker tweeter upgrade.

I have been noticing the whine in my MT randomly throughout rpm band. Seems to only be on coasting and decelerations. Problem is I have 285’s. Think dealer will bitch at me?

I don’t know how bad it is but I say check the diff fluid and enjoy your truck. Don’t think about it.

I wish it was this time easy, but it’s not for me. I can’t not hear it. Maybe the next TSB will be a complimentary set of ear muffs. Ha! I’m sure Toyota knows what it is but the fix must be far more difficult (or expensive) than we realize or they would have fixed it by now.

Do you think a lift will do anything to the noise?

    Thanks everybody for replies!
It was not bad if I had 100k miles on it but I'm pissed off because I paid 38k for a brand new car and planned to keep it for many years.
I am not an expert but with my limited knowledge I think this problem does not have to do anything with oil level or leaf spring. Like moondog said that TSB looks like a cover up to mask the real problem.
To me, the howling noise sounds like my uncle's Fiat with 100k on it with a worn off diff. Really pissed off!
The question is that is it going to become worse if I put more miles on?

I’m truly convinced it’s just harmonics.

Not to debate but my differential had excessive shavings and damaged gears......

How many miles were on the diff? Also did you have correct fluid level? Just curious. And it’s all good we’re just talking here

What exactly do you mean by harmonics?

Small vibrations causing a hum, whistle, whine etc... getting transferred through the undercarriage into the cab.

My howl started around 1000 miles. They replaced the differential around 15,000 plus. The new rear differential was completely silent - not a sound. Around a few hundred miles ago it started back. Corporate did a fluid analysis, tore my truck apart from one end to the other. It had the proper amount of fluid but had excessive shavings in it.

So the second one is making noise?
Was the third member replaced or the entire axle? Did you get to see the amount of metal?
Mine has made noise from 1000 miles or so. Drained the fluid and found a small amount of fuzz on the magnet, that’s totally normal. The fluid was full and clear, slight greenish tint. Checked the level after a 11 mile trip prior to draining it. This was a 8000 miles.
