3rd tows faster than 2nd and passing times once moving are way better. 4.0 just bogged down while 3.5 kicks out.
0-60 is same or tad better.

If these power mogul 4.os are so fast off the line compared to 3rds, how is it 0-60 is same. It's equates to once that 3.5 kicks in it quickly catches up. Called better passing times. Only try to pass a 3rd if he allows.

I had a 2nd. Could not keep speed with same load as 3rd did towing up grade.

The motor is not the limiting factor in the 2nd gen’s hauling capabilities.

OP. I had this discussion with my uncle when I was shopping for my truck (2015). He's had 5 or 6 tacoma's between himself and his two sons so I figured he would know since he's driven or owned every generation.

Side note: My uncle designs rocket parts for NASA and used to race for Mazda so he's kind of my go-to guy for anything engineering or auto related.

These were his words when I told him I was debating on the new truck vs the 2nd gen, "I can see your dilemma, buy a brand new truck or go with something a little cheaper but with a great track record. We still don't know what these new trucks are capable of, yes they have a lot of bells and whistles and all the newest tech, but we also don’t know if this new powertrain will hold up like the trusted 4.0. We simply don't have enough data. Until then, I'd buy with confidence that your money is well spent on a 4.0 because they can go 400,000+ miles, and if you change your mind, you can still get most of your money out of it."

You can do what you want, but if your truck is paid off you might as well keep it. If you're wanting to spend $16,000 I'd go pick up a little scion FR-S or something sporty, or I can give you my PayPal account.

A fence and some bricks? Lol
    I pull 5500 usually.
Better do something with that suspension, it's sagging with maybe 300 lbs.

I had to weigh that when I got to the dump. That was over 5000 on the trailer, which is why I posted that picture. I didn’t realize I was so far over the GVWR while towing. Had to plan my stops but it had no issue pulling it
