I think he's saying he's richer because he could afford a $47k truck but I'm not sure..

I was 26 when I bought my 2015. Got it out the door for $34,000. I wrote a check. I was going to buy a 2016 TRD-PRO which was at $45,000 before tax but then I realized I needed a garage to put it in so I bought the 2015 and got a house with it instead.

I'm saying I could have bought a 2nd instead of a higher priced 3rd. And I dont lurk in 2nd forum. Hard to understand ?

Life is short. If you can afford it get what you want. Listening to what people say 2nd vs 3rd gen will just give you a headache. Test drive it and if it fits your needs go with it. 2020 has a few more bells and whistles but if you can get a better deal on a 2019 I'd just go that route.

It's no different than how you can get fullsize trucks up to $100k+

Except you can do so much more with those.... I get what you’re saying though. I paid less for my rental house than some of the full sized trucks

Wow. So much hate for the 3rd gens. Curious if most of this is coming from actually prolonged use of both gens? Or if it's just a bias of their own trucks

It’s because the 3rd gen had so many issues at the start. 2016s were plagued with issues and 2017s were a little better. 2018 was when they started getting the bugs worked out. But everyone who has a 2016 and 2017 swear by their anecdotal evidence sooooo

    Yep.

When someone dares question the almighty rock crushing power of the 4.0. all hell rains down. Woe be to he (or she) that even hints that this wheezy turd of an engine is anything less than a member of the pantheon of great truck motors.

We've got a 3rd gen with a 3.5, a 2018 T4R with the 4.0 and my son bought a used 2nd gen with the 4.0. Having three Toyotas in the family - with two being the 4 liters, I have no fucking idea why so many people are gaga over this motor. Luckily my wife could give a shit about the sluggishness of the 4.0 - mainly because she drives like an old lady. I take that back - even old ladies lose their shit when they get stuck behind her.

As for my son, after coming from a series of beater commuter cars, I can only assume that the 4.0 is a small evolutionary step up from what he's experienced in his short driving career. I've taken comfort in the fact that it's so fucking slow he cannot possibly get into any speed related trouble with it.

A lot of adjectives get tossed around in reference to the 4.0 - may I add a few? Gutless, slow, agricultural, thirsty, overhyped.....

Luckily, I harbor no illusions. I like Toyotas for their reliability and their ability to hold resale value. My day isn't ruined if someone points out that the 3.5 and 4.0 are less than stellar.

On the other hand, my day is infinitely improved when I log onto TW and see two groups of people arguing about which one off these slug pumps is better. It's like watching two groups argue whether ABBA is better than Air Supply.

I wonder if we’re arguing about 4.0 vs 3.5 because that’s whats available in the truck he’s buying? You’re right though, maybe we should start suggesting he gets a 6.7.

    I think it's because the 4.0 1GR-FE V6 was never used in a car
