In 2016 they initially said Tacomas with Entune would have CarPlay and that the units were capable. They later decided not to do this but we weren't told why.

I'm told this is pretty minimal. All they have to do is plug into the provided CarPlay API. And come on - this is the worlds biggest automaker we're talking about...

No royalties needed for CarPlay and Android Auto. They just don't like the idea of supporting someone else technology even if it is what the customer wants. That's a strong commonality in that culture.

I'd be happy to pay for this upgrade too, and don't need support for it. Toyota, are you listening (I know they aren't'...)?

You're close. The update will be amazing and it will come exactly one week after I purchase and install a new head unit that I'm only marginally satisfied with.

You can hurry this process along by donating to the Truman's New Mediocre CarPlay Head Unit Fund.

The kit is just a mirror of your phone screen. Every thread on this site about carplay or Android auto has someone posting a screen mirror kit. It's not the same thing . It's not even close.

No it is NOT the same. It does allow me to see my Waze on the screen. That is all that I used CarPlay for.

You can not control the phone from the radio screen. You still need the phone for that.

I wanted to the NV connect, but $500 was too much for it. The $100 for the mirror was worth it.

I replaced the radio with a system that had the IData maestro but I wanted something simple.

I agree. It's such a shitty workaround that its not even worth it. The whole point of Apple Carplay/Android Auto is the simplified user experience.

True, but I imagine it may only be a selective roll-out with more to follow. Tacoma owners surely are not the only owners bitching about it.

I was told it is expected for later this year. Id guess they are doing it in batches vs everything at once.

More or less this proves that it IS possible and Toyota IS willing to support previous model years.

Absolutely not. Again, the old head unit was designed to run QNX. All the underlying infrastructure changes on the new units to run Automotive Grade Linux. An upgrade would require new kernel and hardware drivers. Toyota is very conservative with these kinds of things. It won’t happen.

It’s been on some of the Toyota owners surveys I’ve filled out. I know there was also people contacting customer care and asking about it

I asked corporate about this possibly coming to Tacomas a few weeks ago and the girl that is managing my case mentioned that they were testing Carplay for Camry and Sienna currently. I asked what version of Entune those cars run and she noted that they run version 3.0 while the Tacoma runs version 2.0 still. I do hope we get Carplay, but I'd guess we'd either have to get an update to Entune 3.0 or they'd have to test a version of Carplay to run on Entune 2.0 which I doubt would happen. Just sharing some more details about what I learned, hopefully Tacomas receive this soon.

I was just checking and can't confirm yet-I deleted post until I can verify it. I was pretty darn sure that was the update pushed to me recently.

CarPlay would be bitchin. I hope Toyota gives it to Tacoma owners.

Not going to happen for us as we have Entune 2.0 which does not have correct hardware inside audio unit. Those two vehicles listed in memo can get it as they have Entune 3.0.
