So akinson is short intake/compression. Longer power / exhaust stroke?

 

Yes. Exactly. In our engines they “simulate” this by keeping the intake valves open at the beginning of the compression stroke, pushing some of the incoming air charge back into the intake manifold. This is what would challenge someone trying to supercharge the engine. You’d be pushing the air back at the blower.

 

What's the advantage? Bump in efficiency?

I got it. There's no surplus of energy at the end of the power stroke being lost as heat. Makes complete sense. Thanks man!

 

Yeah.....when you think about it, it makes sense in what Atkinson was trying to achieve with his invention. A short dense compression stroke and a giant long expansion stroke sucking every last ounce of energy from the burned fuel, both in the same chamber. It is cool that he achieved it mechanically with his designs.

 

I love it. I love mechanical enginerding like that.
