so I had my taco in for maintenance and a little issue that called for a test drive. After The service was said and then I got in my car and realized they unplugged my dash cam! I assume they do it to protect the mechanics but WTF!? It’s my truck and my camera! Am I over reacting or is this scetchy?

How is your dashcam powered? Hardwired or through the 12v outlet, or through the ODB2 port?

How many miles were added to the truck? It's suspect, sure.

Was it the dealer or the mechanic? Call the dealership and ask the manager what their policy is about dash cams and tampering with them.

I guess there's two ways of looking at it.

No, I would not want my camera unplugged, it's my vehicle. Hell, I don't even want you to mess with the radio, other than maybe turn it down.

Using the flip test- if I was the tech, I wouldn't want someone recording video of me working in my workspace. Not that you could really see, if it's facing the raised hood, but would record the test drive, and maybe audio. I'd probably also expect the owner to be annoyed, to slightly pissed, and say something.

It does make you think, as cameras are everywhere, this will most likely be addressed, and shops may rsevere the right to unplug, of course customers may shop elsewhere too.

What was the little issue? Could be as simple as the mechanic doesn't want video evidence of him exceeding the speed limit. Maybe he took a personal phone call while in your truck. It's a 4-cyl so he probably didn't go for a joy ride like you read about with Corvettes and Shelby Mustangs.

How would you feel if someone came into your place of work and insisted on recording you and everything you do? As long as it was a pretty simple process to unplug the camera I wouldn’t get worked up about it.

When I had mine in for its 5K service, the tech did a pretty sweet robot for the camera...I was impressed.

If I were a shop it would be unplugged seeing as how it is illegal to record audio and video of people without consent. Pretty sure some of you need a lesson on one party and two party consent, depending on where you live.
When you sign that work order, you also give that shop a lot of permissions.
    Google it.

Might also be a consent thing too. The party being recorded has to consent to being recorded. No idea and I’m not a lawyer but that is my best guess

If your truck is being driven and there is an accident you are going to be part of any lawsuit, that’s how lawyers work, most times.
I’d want the camera rolling when it’s being driven.
Sucks but people sue for everything.
    That said I don’t have a dashcam.

Probably by state, but here I believe recording in a place of business is recording in public, which is legal regardless of consent.

I teach and there’s cameras all over my school so it’s a no brainer - ignore them. But yeah, they should have asked and OP should have asked if it was OK to run as well... (in Cali, we have to get consent to do audio recordings, even on video).
