Dash cameras are a source of Sousveilance you can get into trouble from surveillance laws

It does depend on the state. If you're in CA it's a two party state.

    But that's shady AF.

That's because they hotrodded your truck and did burn outs.

How much do you want to bet the dealership is covered in cameras watching customers and no one has an issue with consent. Just say'n...

Depends on the State or County and their surveillance laws

Is there a state with gas stations that don't have surveillance cameras? Are you asked if you consent when you go there? Same with any 7-11. You're in public, therefor you can record. The SCOTUS has ruled on this repeatedly.

Totally different. They are not recording anything specific. If you left the dash cam on to record audio and video of the person working on your truck that's a different story.
A dash cam used for the purpose of recording the actions of a specific person is not the same as a doorbell cam or a security camera mounted on my house or business.

Yeah, some states are one party consent and some require both parties consent.

Technically a dash cam is a form of sousvielance which is alot different than a surveillance camera and the rules are much different for sousveilance

Sousveilance is a small cameras with audio that are small enough to be easily hidden from view such as body cameras or wires

How is my dash cam recording anything specific? I'm getting a little lost here. Your truck is your property. Your truck is somewhere where it is being regularly recorded. It's OK for them and not you?

Me too. I bet they enjoyed the joy ride. I know when I test drove their truck it was never the same again. :frusty: Life has bigger problems.

Public property has nothing to do with it. It's whether it's a public space.

In this case, the tech probably had an ODBII reader attached and *had* to disconnect.

I have a customer right now that when I come in to do service he runs away like a little rat to his security room to watch me on the monitors which I think is funny. So now I just see how much time I can spend on the service call because I know he's itching to lockup and leave.

I can definitely see both sides of the story. I’m just gonna let it pass. My camera has a back up battery that kicks on when it feels movement. So, I got clips and segments of the test drive and nothing was suspicious or out of line so I’m gonna let it slide I guess. I’m just always scepical about anyone touching my truck! Uggg

I am pretty sure consent is needed if recording audio, if only video, i dont think it applies. I am no attorney but remember researching it before i installed my cameras on my home and wanted to add a microphone.

You just need to make your camera less visible. Mine is hardwired to the fuse panel so no cords hanging anywhere and you can't even see the camera from the driver seat. The cam also stays on all the time even when parked.
