Lots to come at some point. Hopefully soon.
Okay so I have a 2006 Prerunner. Its pretty standard, not a sport or TRD off road. It has 37,000 miles on it and just took her in for a oil change at Jiffy Lube (shame on me lol). Of course they told me my baby is on the verge of death unless I pay them big bucks for my front and back differential service and my transfer case service. As far as im aware I don't even have a front diff right? So what exactly do i need, how much is it gonna set me back and who should do it? Thanks guys and gals!:)

If you have a rear locker I think Toyota recommends changing the rear diff fluid every 15,000 miles so that might not be a bad idea to have done. If it were me, I wouldn't go back to that place though, they sound like a bunch of crooks who have no business under the hood of a truck. Next thing they'll be charging you for changing halogen fluid in your headlights...

And no, you do not have a front diff in your prerunner.

OP, if it makes you feel any better, I change my pre's rear diff fluid every 30k...no problems so far *knocks on wood*.

FWIW, jiffy lube sucks imo...they stripped the oil drain bolt on a car of mine, and inserted a self-tapping bolt w/o disclosing their mistake. Who knows what else they did to that car. Been doing my own fluid changes ever since.

Yeah its good I walked then! Since I didn't want to do it he said he would give me a deal, The front and back diff plus the transfer case for the price of just doing two! What a joke. Just a simple question on this board and bam I got exactly what i needed. Thanks.

Yup, sounds like a bunch of idiots.

No transfer case or front diff on a prerunner. The owner's manual seems to recommend nearly no maintenance for "normal" driving, and almost excessive maintenance for towing, off-road, etc. Most of us fall somewhere inbetween.

I think that the rear diff is worth doing at least every 30k. I would be especially vigilant if you have the limited slip rearend with clutches to wear out. Mine is a stick, I plan on 30k intervals on the transmission as well. Not sure what the interval is for autos. 50K seems about right on a newer truck, maybe more often if you are towing. 5K on the oil and filter, air filter when needed, plugs every 30-40K.

Around here it's about 50-60 bucks per diff, gearbox. Auto trans is usually around 100 bucks if you are paying someone to do these things.

I would recommend you find a real mechanic or do things for yourself. I had a buddy who worked at Jiffy Lube for awhile and I heard lots of stories about cars getting run briefly without oil, then filled with oil and let out the door. There is always going to be the possibility of an encounter with an idiot at any shop you choose. Using a kwikee lube type place drastically increases your chances of finding that idiot. I use the local independent toyota specialist. The owner still works in the shop with his guys and keeps on eye on things. I feel much better taking my truck in there instead of to a corporate run place with managers and techs that may or may not be there next week.

Oh, I paid around 350 to have new plugs, oil and filter, both front and rear diffs, manual trans and transfer case fluids changed on mine. Yeah, it's not cheap but I don't like getting gear oil on me anymore.

I just did mine this weekend on my truck. Took me 2 hours since it was my first go around on front, rear, transfer case, and manual transmission. Used Amsoil in all, so should be good for a 100k.

Transmission oil change is the only one I'll pay a mechanic to do since they have the equipment to backflush the torque converter. May not make a difference but once every 50,000 miles doesn't hurt too much. Everything else is just pull a plug, drain, fill and repeat.

You should take it back to them and tell them you only want the front diff done and then watch them try. I'll bet they charge you for it without doing anything.

Way back in the eighties I took my then-new Supra into Jiffy Lube in the Bay Area, and let them change the oil. They also checked the transmission (manual 5sp) and pronounced me good to go. That afternoon I was heading north to SFO on 280 and the car started to whine, then screech, then BANG. The transmission was shelled out- Jiffy Lube had forgotten to replace the plug. After a few days of argument, they finally replaced it, but since then I have always checked them as they go. And I typically know more about my vehicle than they do.

Sqrew reporting them to BBB. Call the BAR. Bureau of Automotive repair. BBB gives ratings. BAR files lawsuits and conducts arrrests. When I worked a shop. Mentioniong the BAR when complaining to the manager was like calling his wife and his mother. He was good guy too. But did not want to deal with them. Period.

I am actually guilty of letting a car leave the shop dry once. Anyone can get distracted and make a mistake. Thats why hospitals get sued so much. I would report someone I thought was trying to rip me off from behind the counter. But you cant blame the average tire monkey though. Those jobs are no different then any other entry labor positon. Its in the training. Which I guess is why its good to do your own work when you can.

You should have, that's fun! When I had a 2wd S-15 they told me my power steering fluid was low (I didn't have power steering). I asked them to show me where the reservoir was so I could check from now on. Needless to say, they couldn't find one :D The manager was so embarrased
