I have a wood lathe that I use quite a bit...accessories can get expensive for it I mostly work on pens. I havent really tried to make bowls and stuff yet, as I dont have the right tools for that.

 

This fellow is kinda mini, almost a laptop.
It once had accessory kits that converted it into a vertical mill and drill press, long gone.




Great for freshening up small armatures.

 

I have a Unimat myself with the stuff to convert to mill / drill press check out the prices on them on ebay you will feint lol but there are still parts and such suppliers around for them they have a following. PM if you need info.

Big lathes are amazing to watch but I also get a kick out of the tiny ones.

Lathe appreciation thread? Ha, very cool and I would have never thought to see this in a million years on TW. This is what I do for a living, I'm a CNC programmer for a very lathe-centric company ... although I have command of the mills at my facility (and others) as well.

Currently have two older Mazak lathes in the building (QT25L and QT20 from 1998), and a new Doosan Puma 300LC ... although we have so much more throughout the network that I program (mostly Fanuc 0i stuff).

2015 Doosan DNM 500II HD and 1997 HAAS VF-3D are our mills, but once again ... this is just at my facility.

Manual lathes, we have 7 of those ... from table top wood lathe size up to to 31" four jaw chuck for the horizontals. We also have a Bullard VTC Cut Master 54". I don't get to mess around on the manuals too much, but I can if I feel compelled to. To be honest, I'm not keen on cranking handles anymore if it's not completely necessary. 21 years of machining will do that to you I suppose.

 

We have a much older one of these in our Gonzales, LA plant, but we're not allowed to use it. Such a shame, because it's super simple to program these at the console (less workload for me).

Ours doesn't have the full enclosure, which our safety department basically banned use of any CNC without full enclosure about 2 years ago. I'll be down there in December; Hopefully they plan to get it retrofitted ... because they just promoted their programmer to shop manager, and now I'm about to pick up part of his work load due to him being spread quite thin.

Picked up a new one today. 10 x 22 inch Grizzly G0602. It's the largest I can fit into my ever shrinking garage.



I slapped a stand together out of 2x4 and 4x4s. 2x4 butcher block top planed on one side.




The fun part is going to be putting part A (432Lb) on top of Part B.

 

I suppose an update is in order myself.

I grabbed this PM1236 back in August, and it has been treating me well. My goal is to upgrade to a TL-1 as soon as I can comfortably do so, but will probably grab a Haas Mini Mill prior to that.

once you get a lathe you end up getting a mill. I bought these specific ones because they can easily be converted to CNC down the road.
