Yes, that way the fluid is forced all the way up through the cooler before is exits the top going back to the transmission.

 

Ok so I just went out to the truck and checked the configuration of the hoses on the trans cooler. I did have it correct the first time, the hose from the radiator is going into the bottom of the cooler and the top hose of the cooler is returning to the transmission. So why the high temps still??

 

gmann1972, I am curious about your trans temps. Your last post was about a year ago. Are your temps still running high. I installed the Long Tru-cool largest cooler they had and was a little surprised my trans temps were not lower. Before the cooler install the temps would run about 185 going from Nashville to my home near Ft Campbell and those are small hills. When running on level ground they ran about 160 according to scanguageII prior to installing the larger cooler. After the install they ran about 150. I customized my front bumper with 5 small cutouts (about 2x31/2 inches each) for more air flow. Now the bottom of my trans cooler is getting more air and the temps came down another 15 degrees.

 

yes my temps are 30 degrees cooler. The derale cooler is a much better cooler than what you have. It is 2 inches thick has the highest rated cooling btu rating that you can get into that space.

 

@gmann1972 how has the trans cooler been treating you? planning to order one asap before this summers camping trips. looking at either the b&M or the tru-cool

Be you go https://trucool.com/products/tru-cool-lpd been running the 4589 for over a year now and when not towing the temps are cooler and when towing the max temp I've seen was about 212 and with the stock cooler it's seen 230s. @gmann1972 how's yours been holding up

 

I have a 2017 off road with tow package. I bought a scan gauge to check my transmission temps ,and my temps are running around 183 not towing anything. I have tried both in od and in the s mode and not seeing a lot of difference. Does this number sound high ?

Do you pin the trans thermostat open while towing? I think the trans thermostat doesn't open until the trans gets to 195 degrees, so unless you pin it open a bigger or extra cooler won't do much in the way of lowering the temps.

 

I installed a larger trans cooler and it brought my trans temps down by 50 deg +/-, so by adding the larger cooler, it did reduce my trans temps. So no I do not pin the stat open.

 

Does that affect the warranty?

 

I'm a mechanic, I don't care about warranty. My truck has never been back to a dealer for anything. Bought it new in 2013 and since then only I work on my truck.

 

Was thinking about getting a TT. My double cab 4.0 4x4 Tacoma doesn't have a tow package. It would be in my best interest to install an aftermarket trans cooler right?

 

The second gen trucks don't have a thermostat on the transmission. They pump fluid out all the time and use the warm radiator to help heat up the fluid when it is cold.

Completely normal. Mine runs at 185 not towing in D or S and is happy at 188 towing 3200# with full payload S4+ect.

 

I've got a 13 Taco with the factory tow package. Just curious as to which hose going to the factory cooler is the inlet and which is the outlet. Bottom is coming from the tranny and top is going back to the tranny? I've got a B&M cooler I'm installing and just want to make sure I get the hoses right. Are you guys hooking up the new coolers down stream of the factory cooler?

 

Hey Guys. I was doing a little reading and thinking about installing an additional transmission cooler as well when I ran across this post. I recently got the torque pro app working on my cell and have it set up for reading transmission temps. This past weekend was my first trip using the app while towing our little travel trailer. It was a shorter run, only about an hour and fifteen minutes, mostly flat interstate. Outside temp was about 90 degrees, towing about 70mph in 4th with about a 4000 pound travel trailer. At 70mph, trans was holding about 189 degrees. In stop and go traffic it came up to about 200-205 degrees. Again this was all flat, no hills or mountains.
I know it is always a good idea to have additional cooling but was just curious if you guys thought I really need one or not.

 

In my opinion, your trans temps are within normal parameters for the situation you describe. If you install an additional cooler your pan temp will be lower and you will feel better but I’ve found that the pan temp stays within the 180 to 190 range after warming up whether towing or not. And I think that’s what Toyota designed it to do with the factory cooler and synthetic ATF.

I tow 3200# with a full truck payload mostly flat S4 between 55 - 60 and my pan temp levels out at 186-188.
