Just thought I had read the German-sourced bulbs were much better.

Put those suckers in, man. Last night I drove around and was able to see the hot spots projected on the ground well in front of the truck and the cut off line is way more pronounced on fences & bldgs. In town, I can actually see that the headlights are on. However, I did notice more intense glare reflected back at me as I was behind cars at stop lights.

Not sure if this info is relevant for anything, but this is what my 4Runner came with:
Low: Philips 55W H11 LL China
    High: Koito 60W HB3 (9005) Japan
    Fog: Osram 19W H16 Germany

    2016 Rav4:
    High/Low: Philips 55W HIR2 LL (9012) Germany
    Fog: Osram 19W H16 Germany

So I may have read wrong, but if our truck came with the German made Philips high bean H9 then that is a better option than the Hella H9? I need to check to see what I pulled out of my high beams in my SR5. I know it was a Philip bulb, but not sure where it was made.

If what I have is the standard German Philips bulb, then yes the German Philips are slightly better than the Hellas. Likely not so for the Chinese Philips.

I’m working on something else to test for the high beam.

Thanks for the input. This forum is allready better than my legacy GT forum. Everyone just shits on each other’s questions over there. Lol. First taco here. But so far I’m pretty impressed with it. Especially coming from a full sized Gmc.

For the 3rd time now, I've ordered these 'Off Road' over wattage 70w H9s from Xencn, which I believe is an Osram China company. If these are what they advertise they will be the high beam upgrade, but only testing will tell. The first package never arrived, many days after the expected delivery date the China tracking status changed to 'delivered' despite never showing up. So the 2nd time I upgrade the shipping to China 'premium shipping'. Same result, package did not arrive when listed and many days latter it the status changed to 'delivered' when it didn't showed up. Very annoyed. So this time I paid an absurd premium to use DHL, so that a reputable German company will handle the shipping.

^ May be time to avoid China all together.

Ordered the GE 130+ H11 bulbs to try as the low beam option, got the 25% discount.....and now the wait begins. Already did the map/dome LED light mod, much better inside lighting now. At least 2x brighter. My eyes are happier!

Hi @crashnburn80 - just so if I am following this correctly, if the original equipment Gen 3 Taco bulbs are German Philips H11's, their performance is actually slightly better than the Hella H9s? Interesting. I hope I have the Chinese ones because the output on my Taco is horrible!

Again, I cannot thank you enough for the time and expense you have put into our education on lighting.

    Cheers!

I think he meant the h9 in the stock high beams are slightly better than the hella h9s. Almost all h9s should be better than the stock h11 in the low beams.

No, the 3rd Gen German Philips H9 high beam bulb is slightly higher performing than the Hella H9s. Both are massively higher performing than the stock 3rd Gen H11 low beam bulb. Swapping the low beam H11 bulb out and replacing it with a German Philips H9 or Korean Hella H9 (both also offer Chinese versions) is the discussed upgrade. To do this you will need to trim an internal plastic tab off the bulb so that it will fit the H11 plug, as shown here with different H9 bulbs.

Or use the adapter harness others have created by modifying a small H11 to H11 jumper harness so you modify the harness connector once rather than the bulbs each time which is much more convenient.

I'll guess almost any bulb you've mentioned in this thread will out-perform my stock Chinese long life H11s. I wonder if the location of the assembly plant is why Tacomas come with German Phillips H11s and my T4R came with Chinese H11s :notsure:

The GE +130 is a big improvement in the T4R low beam projectors.

My T4R came with a Phillips long life H11 low beam and a Japanese(?) 9005 high beam bulb.

I measured every bulb in the shop tonight, with a NIST-traceable lux meter with a current calibration sticker. I am in Canada and some of these bulbs have to be ordered from far away e.g. Powerbulbs so don't rely on the "lux/$" column - may not apply to you.

    Screen Shot 2019-03-30 at 20.27.17.jpg

I had the meter in "peak hold" mode, about 70 cm in front of the headlight. I waved the meter around the hotspot and recorded the peak.

For Canadians, it looks like the Hella H9 ordered from RockAuto is the best deal, at least right now.

No idea how long these bulbs will last though.
