Ah, the Wind River Canyon. Definitely recognize that place.

In fact, it could be that very southbound pullout (there are a couple of them that look very similar) where I had one of the hairiest moments I've ever had in the truck. Way more scary than hanging off the edge of the Morrison jeep trail.

It was in the dead of winter, several Christmases ago, heading north towards Powell. I was in a line of vehicles (10 or so) creeping along because it is downhill and it was very very slick. The road was like an ice sheet as can happen there. Someone ahead bobbled and slowed, forcing every one behind to do the same. I had to touch the brakes and when I did, I was along for the ride.

Once again, my guardian angle was riding with me because somehow the truck aimed straight for the narrow opening at the south end of that rest area pullout. I went through the opening sideways, barely missing the guard rails on either side of the opening. In fact, it was not until later that I realized how narrow that opening really was. At the time, there was nothing but powder covering everything. They do not plow those during the winter so there was several feet of snow that went everywhere when I hit it sideways and quickly slowed the truck to a stop.

The thought of that experience still gives me goose bumps to this day.

Yeah, I remember that spot very well.

Wow wild ride I would imagine. That section of hwy gets nasty in a hurry during storms, the wind and snow just swirl. Thanks!

 

Looks more like the north end pullouts, closer to Thermopolis.

Worked just like a runaway truck ramp. Yep, you had a guardian angel looking over your shoulder that day.

A couple of years ago when I was going through there, there was a section of guard rail busted out, with first responders just arriving. A semi had gone over the edge, and was down by the river. It was a 30+ foot drop where he went off, not a good day for that guy.

 

There is lots of country like that in Wyoming. You need to see more of the state, get out of that southwest corner.

 

Both sides of the Gorge are all I need haha.

Richards gap is kinda ledgy and there’s some mountainish places on the side of the road between the Utah border and Kemmerer, but other than that I see a lot of sage and rolling hills haha

Did you guys run into snow after doing Elephant Hill? I saw where you turned around and came back out the way you went in?

And what happened to your beacons? You disappeared after Blanding and never came back.

 

Yeah we had to turn around twice due to snow...lame

Idk radio is dead. Gonna order a real 2m one for aprs instead of this hacked commerical radio

 

We did run into snow once we got into the National Forest, and had to come back out. Actually glad we did - fun trail to run both directions. Well, glad...but also wish we could have gone out over the mountains.

Monte's APRS radio finally gave up the ghost on the trip as you noticed. His CB is as well. It sort of seems like Igor is turning into Frank.

IIRC, those mountains between Canyonlands and Blanding get quite high. ~9,000'??? It was probably a bit optimistic to think it was passable this early in the season.

The CB too? First I've heard of one of those Uniden radios failing. I know mine has been thru the wars too. Somehow continues to work well. Maybe it's days are numbered too.

 

Yeah, I think 8500 or so. We were measuring in meters, since that's what's in BCS. Each time, we got to ~7000, and had ~1500' to go when things got impassable. Bummer too, 'cause the second time we were going to see some cool stuff. Oh well, a reason to head back! (again. as always. )

It's not his radio, it's the coax to the antenna; wearing through the sheathing, shorting out. Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech.

Think Ben killed a 520xl but that was due to running it with no antenna haha


And depends on the route you take. Ours was going to hit 8700. Apparently it's is at 185% snow pack right now. We hit 10500 when you an I crossed. But we we're going to take a different route this time.

 

What? I thought on the SOS when the bamf rear bracket died on goose trail you have to buy a new radio after that trip??

My cable is nice. It's just rubbed through at the tail light. Probably have to route it a bit different next time

 

Well it needs to be a NMO cable too.
