Funny...I had a similar experience at my dealer. He was captured on my dash cam as he test drove my '98 SR5 trade-in. Not as sinister as your recording. Mine is just funny and I am very happy with my dealer and my purchase.

Here in CA., you are required by law to post a sign inside your vehicle that states audio is being recorded...or turn off the mic on the dash cam. Yes, it's true, I researched it after someone pointed that fact out. Other states may have similar laws.

PS - I still don't have a sign in my truck and I record audio full time.

if your paranoid about taking your truck to have service done because of service techs abusing your vehicle you don't need a survaillence camera you need to see a psychiatrist images_82f6c0dc63d364dfdad366d5fc97cfb832034b3c.jpg

What's the OBDII got to do with a dashcam? I realize some people use the OBD connection for power that's not usually how it's done. Most are hard wired to the fuse box or plugged in the cig lighter connection.

But other than not wanting to be watched, I can see why the tech might unplug the dashcam. They almost always plug into the OBDII the check and monitor things and might not want the current draw of the dashcam complicating things.

Happened to me as well, they told me they would talk to the technician. I gave them a poor on their survey and never went back. That same day the guy in the drive thru bay stalled my truck and grinded reverse.

States gave different laws but I would think the Wiretap law falls under this. Being record on video is fine but recording audio one must be notified either by sign or verbally.

Depends on how personal property is defined. I have cameras monitoring my house. There is no sign nor do I ask every tom dick or Harry for their permission either. It’s for my protection of MY property.

The dash cam is for security purposes. If a tech unplugs it it asks more questions then solves. Just leave it alone and do your job.

I guess what I don't like about the idea of having cameras recording is working on stuff sucks, foul language may be used, etc. Then people like the tech find out later they were nothing more than fodder for a YouTube channel or Facebook post because someone was hoping that the next post was the big hit because the tech used foul language all encompassing of the seven dirty words and he held it in second gear a little too long for some soft Nancy boy's taste.

If I was still a tech your camera would get blue painters tape over it or disconnected. I wouldn't expect the go breathe over the chef's shoulder at a restaurant as he cooked my meal either so why should you get a front row seat to what i'm doing?

Recording inside your property doesn't require consent, sounds like you need a lesson or two yourself. If you were correct, all the videocam footage of people robbing convenience stores would be illegal.

In FLA you can record video except where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy (restrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms). You cannot record audio without consent. My camera is off when the truck is off and I have audio shut off permanently.

It's another question, but would you really want what you say in your vehicle played in court?

As I mentioned previously a dash cam falls under Sousveilance laws not Surveillance , there's a big difference and some here are getting confused

Nope. It's all about intent. Why else would you leave a dashcam plugged up when it is in a shop that you willingly gave your vehicle to and signed paperwork for them to fix or maintain it. They are leaving it plugged in hoping to catch someone using foul language or something. It's a dick move by a paranoid generation. If I can't trust the shop and people then I'm taking it somewhere where I can trust them.
Check the laws. Google is your friend.

    Paranoia strikes deep...

I've watched guys work on stuff in my home and even assisted them. None of them complained and one plumber taught me how to solder pipe. I really could give a rat's ass about watching a tech work on my truck, but I don't think it's unreasonable to record video when they're driving my property.

If it's hard wired it's turned on all the time. How does intent come into play? Other than the intent to monitor your own property.

My dash cam stays powered on all the time, even when the truck is parked. The only time I shut it down completely is when I know I will be riding my bike all week and the truck won't be cranked up for at least 5 days. Therefore, when I do drop my tuck off for any service I do not think to turn the camera off and it is in a location where you cant really see it from the driver seat, so its not something I would think about. In my case, its not about intent or not trusting, it's just out of habit, and I think many with a dash cam are the same way. A lot of cameras power up when the vehicle is turned on and power down when the vehicle is shut off, so there is nothing to do on a day to day basis, so why unplug it when taking the vehicle in for service. Others have a parking mode so again, it is not a daily activity to turn the cam on or off, so its not something one would think about when dropping their car off at a dealership. So, with a camera being left on while a vehicle is in the shop is not always to try and capture someone doing something wrong or funny or stupid, its more of a case of habit and not think about unplugging it.
Now, a tech unplugging the camera is kind of suspicious, because the tech should only be touching what they need to touch. I am a tech and I have on many occasions had customers leave something of value in their boat, even cash. I work around it and do not touch it if I can get by without doing so, and I would definitley not unplug anything if it was not in my way.
