This is an open letter to all the “I’m a Bama fan but I’m pulling for Auburn” people -

You are a bad fan. I don’t say that just out of hate for Auburn but also out of respect for Auburn fans and the rivalry that you are spitting on with your wish washy “War Eagle” for today nonsense.

It’s not okay to ROLL TIDE and run your mouth about that cow town all year long and then deny Barners their hard earned right to rub this incredible run in your face because you decided to switch sides “just for tonight” or until football season starts. It’s weak.

    It’s disrespectful.

You are diluting one of the last pure things that a politically correct society obsessed with protecting delicate sensitivities hasn’t managed to nerf with soft edges yet - sports rivalry hate.

If I have to explain why that hate is really respect then you can stop reading right now and head to the comments with your bad take. You’ll never get it.

“...but this Bama player / coach was showing love for Auburn - are they bad fans?”

They are players. They are coaches. Their job is / was to game plan and make plays. It’s a hard job. You’re a fan. Your job is to rep your team while you dish it out and take it when the time comes. It’s easy.

    You’re failing.

“...but you gotta support the state and the conference”

This is something that new fans who didn’t jump on the bandwagon until after the advent of social media made rivalries with more mass (read: profitable) appeal popular and those who have been softened up by the marketing of platforms that profit from it believe. The folks who remember when talking trash was done with shoe polish on your windows and face to face with the sad Auburn fans who were brave enough to show up at church the next day ain’t buying it. We’re buying lunch at work on Monday when we lose bets.

It’s okay to be happy for the players. They’re kids. They work hard. It’s okay to appreciate the game. It’s fun. It’s not okay to subtract your skin from it.

When you say “I’m a Bama fan but “War Eagle” tonight” you aren’t being classy. You’re being selfish. By taking yourself, as a Bama fan, out of the equation you are robbing Auburn fans of their (lol rare) opportunity to gloat (52-21 tho) and cheapening the rivalry. You’re no better than fans who talk trash all year long and then disappear after a loss.

This is the bottom line. Auburn fans fans don’t want your support. They want your hate and they want it now more than ever. And you know what? They deserve it. They’ve earned it.

    Do your job.
