Intent to monitor a specific person charged with working on your truck. That's illegal unless he gives permission. If it's on your house or in a business, it is directed at no specific person.
If the thing was hardwired and I was working on it, there would be a nice piece of electrical tape over the lens.

This makes no sense. A hardwired camera in my vehicle isn't specifically targeting you or anyone else. I don't understand why you believe a camera hardwired in a vehicle is there to monitor you specifically. It is there to monitor my property, just like the dealer has cameras to monitor theirs.

Oh, and you had better hope your tape or anything else you people did didn't harm my property. In fact, you just made my point for me. You have no right to touch anything else in my vehicle except what you are supposed to repair. The only reason I can think of for this concern is that you are in fact doing something you shouldn't, or not doing something you should.

I have a dash cam on my truck....and I don’t know the legalities of them.....I only have it in case something happens and some dishonest person tries to lie.....
If I was a tech working on a customer’s vehicle, I wouldn’t worry about being recorded unless I was doing something sketchy. If the customer reviewed footage of me, the worst thing they’d prob see me do is scratch my bag or drop a few F bombs.......If they’re gonna complain about that, let them....
If the tech disconnected your dash cam by unplugging it from the cigarette lighter, I wouldn’t worry, probably a legit reason. If he disconnected the plug directly from the camera, i’d be wondering why he didn’t want to be recorded.....
We live in an age when we’re recorded all the time while out in public and at work. Honest people usually don’t care and cameras make dishonest people think twice....IMO anyway.

Why cover it up? I wouldn't mind being recorded by a dash cam because my shop has cameras in it anyway. I take pride in my work and you know what, go ahead and record me, that way others can see how much care and pride I take in what I do.
Do we cut up and joke around, sure we do, it's 3 guys in a shop, some funny and stupid things will be said and done, but never anything that will harm a customer or their property.

The part that bothers me the most is what people can do with the footage. This isn't exactly like a c-store back in the day recording on a VCR when the internet didn't exist. I didn't agree to be part of your YouTube channel or Facebook fodder because I said one of the seven dirty words on camera. I'm sure will get some that will chime in oh i'd never do that, but people do all the time load stuff up on the internet that was a bad idea.

One wouldn't dream of dragging a camera into their accountant's office to record them doing your books, the same goes for setting up a tripod when your rectum is probed at the docs office. So why is a mechanic any different? That accountant and doctor can screw up and cost you money too.

First off, I think we're talking about someone's hardwired camera in their vehicle.

Personally I wouldn't have the time or inclination to watch the footage unless something was wrong, which I believe is the case with 99% of people.

I’ll agree that posting footage somewhere without the techs permission is definitely not cool and prob could lead to some legal issues for the camera owner. But what’s a dash cam really gonna record during a service anyway? Maybe a close up of the trucks hood scoop or the shop wall in front of the hoist if the hood is down? A tech grabbing some tools from his box? A brisk test drive? Unless you’re changing wiper blades with your dick out, you’ll prob be ok.....
BTW. I have cameras inside and outside my home and shop. I’ve never had a tradesman ask me to turn the cameras off before they do a job.....If they did, i’d hire someone else

What about when it drives into the shop? Do the other techs inside that private shop have a reasonable expectation of privacy assuming the camera is facing both ways?

It's just another reason to many as to why the trades are dying. Your tech held it in second gear way too long and I got the video, i'm going to run to Yelp, Facebook and YouTube if you don't throw in six free oil changes and extend the warranty out till 100K. Automotive techs along with truck drivers are two of the trades that get fucked in the ass from every direction.

Eavesdropping is a real thing, especially when you are NOT present in your vehicle. And you probably signed your rights away anyhow saying they could preform maintenance on your vehicle. Read the fine print of what you signed and that should give you a better idea of what you agreed to. And get a life.

I'm sorry there are assholes out there that would do that. There are also shops that don't do the work you paid for, not that the camera would see that.

I'm a tech and I unplug them. I don't record you in your workplace. You don't record me in my workplace. I have a right to privacy the same as you.

I agree there are assholes out there on both sides.
I think this is a more generational thing.

I think this is a more generational thing from us guys who were living back before cameras were in every pocket lol.
Are you recorded in your workplace by an individual?

I'm a boomer, so probably not generational. I'm in recorded meetings several times a day. It doesn't bother me at all.

And yes, there are people in the office with their web cams on all the time, and people with cameras in their cars in the parking lot.

I can honestly admit that I have a abused a few customer cars by ripping ass in them and closing the doors up on a hot day. Sometimes it was a little wet and I had to do a safety wipe.

I video call a dozen times a day and my meetings are sometimes video'd. But having a stranger recording me without my permission, not knowing what they are going to do with the video, is definitely not cool and in most cases it is illegal.
We will have to agree to disagree. Cheers!
