This has happened twice in roughly less than 50 miles. This last time I was backing into my garage at idle speed lightly apply the brake when the motor surged and I had to put the brake almost to the floor to keep from backing through my garage. Scared the sh!t out of me. This also happened while at a stop at a red light. I had to throw it in neutral to keep from plowing forward. And NO my foot did not accidentally hit the accelerator. This seems to me like a MAJOR liability. Has anyone else experienced this?

Probably AC surge for when the clutch engages, been normal since 05 if that’s the case.

There’s a clutch on the AC compressor, when it engages the rpms will surge and with a light foot on the brakes the truck can lurch forward/backward. Even with the AC off, the compressor still cycles every now and then to keep the compressor from seizing due to lack of use.

This has happened to me numerous times, mostly when backing into my garage. No, AC running, AT, foot on brake thank God. Crazy thing is that I totally forget about it, and have yet to ask my Toyota Service buddy about it. Making a note now to call him on Monday. Thanks for reminding me of this.

Really? That's got to be the worst idea Toyota has ever had.

Power steering surge. If you so much as touch the steering wheel when creeping slow, you get a slight surge. Unnerving when you're trying to close the inches in a tight spot.

Try it out. Pull slowly forward or back with a little pressure on the brakes. Smooth, until you turn that steering wheel the slightest bit.

This is also true and forgot about it, I was working on a 3rd gen on Thursday and remember revs surging as high as 1100 rpms when I moved the wheel just a tiny bit. Me and my brother thought it was odd.

Mine did this initially as well and it was especially frustrating when trying to back out of my garage or a parking space. After a few thousand miles it began to happen very rarely. Now that I have the TSB ECU update and OV Tune it's basically non-existent but I'm not sure which of the 2 truly fixed it.

Been watching the OV thread and it WILL be my next mod. As a matter of fact I think I'll go ahead a pull the trigger this week.

Pretty common feature on vehicles, not just Toyota.
Air pump cycles when turn the wheel, it will also make a suction sound through the intake, more noticable when you have an aftermarket intake.

This seems crazy. Why don't my other vehicles do this? Frankly I've never owned a vehicle that displays this same rediculess surging. This needs to be dealt with by Toyota but unfortunately this is probably another issue they just ignore or brush under the rug and call "normal". Sorry Toyota...NOT normal.

This is the first vehicle I have ever seen do that. Not a HUGE deal, I'm use to it now. But still don't like it.

I know at least I've experienced it on a few of my Subarus. One in particular had a very noisy clutch that oddly sounded like sliding a knife against a sharpener. Odd. I had a Honda that would do it as well. Either way, I've never experienced throttle surging as a result on any of them. My truck is a MT though.

A lot of cars these days come with electric steering, no power steering pump needed.

Actually it is normal and occurs with several other makes/models. It's not a 'Tacoma gen3 problem'.

It's a common for fuel injected engines to do this, just not so surge like in my experience. The engine wants to maintain a minimum idle RPM, so any load (power steering, A/C, etc) that drops the RPM below that level will get an additional bit of fuel to bring the RPM back up. I believe it to be a part of the "idle air control" circuit, or whatever Toyota/manufacturers refer to it now as.

My truck does what you describe quite often while cold when turning and braking in reverse and forward, but only rarely when warmed up. It's something I've become used to, but was quite surprised at initially.

My truck has done this a few times now. The first time I was trying to back out of a cramped parking spot and I was pretty close to the vehicle behind me when it happened. Scared the hell out of me. It's only done it a couple of times since then, but it makes me a little nervous. My 2016 Tacoma never did this in the 31,000 miles that I had it. My 2008 Tacoma never did that in 110,000+ miles. I know the AC turning on or power steering will cause the RPMs to jump (all of my vehicles did that), but if that's all it is, I would think that I would have had that lurch in reverse happening more frequently. Maybe you have to turn the wheel just right and the AC turn on at the same time? :notsure:
