It's risk vs reward. What are the chances they will get caught? What is the benefit if they don't get caught, and what is the consequence if they do? If they have access to a police scanner and hear a call where most of the local LEOs are on the opposite side of town, a thief can feel reasonably safe carrying out their misdeeds. I know it's not all thieves who have this reasoning process, especially tweakers. But with theft in general, if the consequences were more severe, we would have fewer thieves. Our society is too understanding.

I could not think of a pattern to do on my tailgate yet. I am sure one day I will.

Was looking for some pictures I took when I did some destructive test. Tried bending, prying and chiseling one of ours to see if I could break it in a mocked up situation. Ended .up bending it a bit but unless it was removed properly it would not allow enough distortion to allow the tailgate to be removed. The only thing I did not do was a cut test with a die grinder. If that was the case the crack head would just move on. Will post some when I find them.

My truck wasn’t but about 4 months old when that happened. If you want to replicate the patten. Just try pulling up a fence post that’s in 6 feet of concrete. But make sure it’s a short chain so you only get the tailgate

I looked into getting it fixed as it was a brand new truck but the body shop wanted $350 to bondo and respray and that was with me taking all the plastic bits and handle off.

It’s ugly but not $350 ugly.

Matter of fact with the swing out tire carrier i have now I don’t even need a tailgate. Anyone want to make an offer?

I did that to my front bumber, scraped the paint off the plastic on a block wall. My fix was a steel bumper. I would offer to take that one off your hands but I cannot get my tailgate off without cutting.

Because Toyota states that the tailgate is not a structural item and to load heavy things in the truck bed you're suppose to take the tailgate off to load them then reinstall. That's why they bend so easy. They save a few bucks and we get to buy more from them. Why don't they just build the damn things like they used to without having to disassemble a truck to load something??? Amazing how the quality goes down but the price goes up.

Whoa, I could never intentionally damage my truck like that. I’d rather get kicked in the nuts

I've been lurking for a bit and learned a lot from this forum. Sorry to see this happen as I just ordered a lock for my tailgate.
