From what I understand they put a little focus on making sure your weapon is secure and ending up in a cuffing position.

I’ll agree with this. I started rolling in September. Spring I had to stop cause cost didn’t justify the amount of times I can go, coaching and shit. I’ll be back in late May. But if I were to wrestle with anyone that isn’t trained it would be over in about 5 minutes.

That's literally just basic BJJ, and it'll take a lot longer to do it reliably and smoothly than whatever "LE class" they offer can teach you. I'd train at Alan Belcher's place if it's close to you.

Monthly fee, but they usually offer a discount if you pay for 6/12 months in one go.

First official sparring roll tonight, my first partner, the professor.

He was really great to work with, he applies just enough resistance to keep you busy, he seems to have multiple counters for every move, then when you’re just about gassed he says, ok you want to know why that move isn’t workin

Move this hold here, shift yer base a bit, then follow through with yer hips and dadgum ifen it didn’t work.

Then one of the brown belts was teachin me some chokes.

    Haha it’s super sick right?
I trained gi exclusive for the first year and a half before i tried any nogi classes. I still train predominantly gi but I mix in some no gi too for fun.

Haha yeah. Definitely. Training both is optimal. But my heart is with the gi.

Give it a few more months and you will start to feel a lot more confident.

What is really happening is you are starting to realize the more you learn in this sport the more you realize you really don't know shit. There will always be a lower belt that will humble you or a guy that has been a black belt for twice as long as you have even been training that won't even break a sweat while he casually and completely dominates you :D

Do a lot of drilling if you're serious about getting good fast. Increasing the amount I drilled was a game changer as a white belt. When I was a fresh blue belt nearly every place I'd drop in at when I traveled thought I was sandbagging because I would just grind them with the same pass and back take sequence that I drilled every morning.

Don’t forget that the other newbs you started with are advancin as well, I was told by our professor a good bit of it is learning to be comfortable in very uncomfortable situations.

11 years of bjj plus & some odd years of wrestling here... IMO if you want to get good fast, train/spar/roll at about 30-40% so you'd be able to figure out how/where your body can move. 30% is harder than it sounds, as no ego is allowed w/ that flow, something I struggle to this day.
