Rubber plugs for gaps in bed rail available now

Does anyone have a set of plugs you'd like to get rid of?

Looking for a set of plugs if anyone has any...

 

Mixed reviews on these OEM plugs. I ordered a topper and want to get everything sealed up before install (under all rail caps, bed corner gaps, cubby covers).
Does anyone vouch for these plugs working well? Thanks.

Do you have the take the header rail off to put these in or do they just plug in?

 

I don't think you have to remove header rail, but you do need to cut the side rail caps. Based on info in this thread.

i installed them after i bought a newish OEM tri fold that didnt come with the plugs. before i put them in with a little rain and just driving around water would leak in. after install no more water in my bed. if you have a bed mat, water will just go under it and your stuff on top will stay dry

 

Does this stuff dry like rubber or is it hard?

 

Duct seal is like play dough that never dries. You can buy it at any hardware store. Very similar to what the automotive industry calls “gorilla snot”, but less “sticky”.

 

$80 for a couple OEM rubber pieces is outrageous, shown in the pics. It looks like you could just stuff anything to seal it up.

 

Reminds me of what we used to pack stuffing tubes between decks and/or bulkheads, but we called it monkey sh!t

 

Pretty much.
My tonneau installer used a black heavy density foam in between . As much as it rains and washing truck, I've yet to have a problem.
At first I thought " what the heck is this ?"... until I looked from under the tonneau cover.
Pretty simple and works.

If I have to cut anything to make it fit, that's not happening.

I will have a pair of the dense foam sticky square pads that came with my new Tonneau cover that I will turn someone onto once I put my new tonneau on my truck. Hoping to put it on this afternoon or tomorrow. I had a extra pair Extang sent me back in 2016 I put on my header rail a couple days ago while waiting for my new tonneau to arrive.

i used some closed cell black foam (discarded packing material) i shaped for the purpose. helps to be a pack rat.

edit: as i recall, i added some more foam plugging all gaps using waterproof glue. using a bright light outside and near the gaps and viewing from the inside of the closed bed helps to find the gaps.
i remember lifting the rail caps near the cab to plug things up but i forget details. it worked.

 

Will these plugs help with leaking in the corners with a cap/topper also?

 

That is why I was going to get them. However, it sounds like they are only marginally effective. I pulled the bulkhead, removed the end plugs, sealed them with RTV, put down a line of RTV under the bulkhead and re-installed it. Then pulled the rail caps, put down 2 lines of RTV and filled the 6 threaded holes and reinstalled rail caps. Then I used butyl tape to fill the corner gaps; both sides of the plastic rail cap. I made little tootsie rolls with the tape and kept cramming them in there and packing it tight with a nail head. It was a pain. I had the cap installed 2 days later. We'll see if it stays dry. Also got Mike's cubby cap covers and plan to seal tailgate and those 3" gaps in front of tailgate.
