Put on some new wheels and tires a few months back and went from the stock OR size (265/70/16) to a 275/70/17. Just dawned on me I should probably get a new spare as well. Found the right tire I'll use, but now I'm debating if I buy a fifth wheel to match or go with a cheap steel rim? What does everyone do when they upgrade their tires and how do you have them mounted?

I dug into this myself a few weeks back.....had upsized the tires back in Dec and didn't upsize the spare to match

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mismatched-spare-issues.598742/

long story short, you're best bet is to have a matching-size spare.....doesn't have to be the exact width match, just outside diameter. That'll get you anywhere you need to go. If you're only gonna drive 10mi and get a new tire right away, a mismatched spare will be fine.

I run snow tires in the winter, so I've got a 2nd set of rims. Summer Coopers are 33" and Winter Blizzaks are 32".......I've got a 5th 33" Cooper on the OEM 16" steel wheel under the truck right now, but next winter I'll be picking up a cheap steel wheel and any 32" tire on craigslist as my "matching" winter spare. I wouldn't bother keeping a matching wheel under the truck, extra money just hidden away. Some day if I go to 35s and get a swing out spare carrier on the back like a Jeep, I'd get a matching wheel for the looks.

i went to 265/75/16, i just kept the or spare. I figure size difference isnt big enough for a short < 10 mile trip to get a flat fixed.

I'm running the 17" 4Runner TRD Pro wheels with BFG K02 275/70/17. Just found a 17" spare rim for the FJ Cruiser on Amazon which I'll use for the time being. Anyone know the largest size you can fit in the spare slot under the bed? Thanks

I bought a 5th wheel just because I have Ray10s and didn't want to have to wait forever if I messed one wheel up, but if I had anything other than SCS wheels, I would've just bought a cheap steel wheel.

I also have a brand new mud tire on it, but those ended up being really hard to balance so I no longer have a matching tire. I did this so I wouldn't get stuck wheeling somewhere if I blew a tire since I don't have lockers.

Check ebay. I got a spare wheel just like yours from a seller that parts out wrecked vehicles. I got one like new for $100 and a used Like new k02 to match my set for $100. Mounted and balanced for free at discount tire, since that's were i got my new tires from.

I don't see any listed currently but worth a check from time to time if you're not in a hurry.

I’d go to the local junkyard and look for a cheap wheel and tire in the size you need. You may be surprised what they have. Probably won’t have to use it, but when you need it, you need it.

I run a matching size spare tire 285/75/16 on the factory steel wheel . it does fit under the truck but I had to bend the front stays.
I also had to shift the exhaust/tail pipe a little to the right .
