Prinsu leer topper install

Just put the Prinsu TopRack on yesterday. Looks great and tough as nails. Not sure of the load capacity, had my 220# ass on top of it with complete confidence. My biggest concern with weight limits will come into play when off highway, with all the moving n’ shaking.

 

This is the 2nd thread I can think of where Leer installed the rails backwards.

 

It was more of a disappointment than it was difficult to fix. After we struggled with the front a bit we thought the topper one would be a breeze.

 

What’s the distance between the 2 tracks?

 

How did you cover up the old holes? Instead of flipping and drilling new holes, couldn’t you have just switched sides

This makes me want to check my Leer to see if the rails are backwards too. I have the exact same shell... I don't remember my prinsu mounting feet ever sitting that flush to the rail when I installed a year or so ago...

 

They were little less than half a hole off. Just filled with silicone.

 

Measuring from the outside part of the tracks its 41 inches.

I put these on all the slots bottom and sides and on all sides of the front wind deflector bar. It helped a lot with wind noise. Thought I'd post a pic since I couldn't find any online. It took 40 all together for the topper and cab racks.

I used full length pieces on everything you could see and on the bottoms i used 2 pieces of the excess from cutting to size. You can see the small gap in the first pic where the 2 pieces meet. I also put 2 full length pieces on the top slots on the first crossbar closest to the wind deflector.

In normal conditions after this i have almost no wind noise until i go over 55-60. Over 60 wind noise is very minimal but you do hear it. Its comparable to having the factory roof rack in the folded position at that point. But if there are heavy winds or cross winds nothing you can do about wind noise.

 

How many pieces did you buy? Trying to not do math right now

 

40 and that's covering all the t slots sides and bottoms for the cab rack and topper rack. I did put 2 on the rop of the first bar closest to the wind deflector. Not much waste with using the excess cut pieces for the bottoms

I know it's old thread but I have information to let you all know about the rails.

They are not backwards... the rails are made for Thule racks which that's how Thule racks are designed. Which is why you see the "Thule" racks being sold in the "Leer" brochure or catalog. You can flip them around for Prinsu top rack if you are up for it. If not, you can take it to the shop and have them flip them around for you.

Or you can take the rails off and put alternative mounts for Prinsu top rack just like the way Prinsu cab rack's mounted.

 

Yep, can confirm. I have a brand new Leer shell and the tracks are mounted in the same orientation as the OP's first pictures. They put them on intentionally that way. Whenever I get to adding a Prinsu, I will most likely try to find a wedge shaped spacer or have someone machine some for me.
If I had known, it might have been possible to have Leer reverse the mounting, but whatever. I will adapt and overcome!

 

Interesting, and good to know! I ended up having my dealer swap mine around and re-seal everything.

 

Sorry to bump an old thread again however does anyone know if this is still the case? Prinsu says their top rack is designed to fit Leer shells fitted with thule/yakima rails. Seems incorrect if you have to modify your topper to make it work.

I have a Prinsu rack on my Leer topper with Thule factory tracks. Everything went together perfectly. The Leer factory installed the tracks correctly (flat side up and the correct 42" between tracks). The only wrinkle is that the tracks are slightly arched, front to back, on the topper. Since the Prinsu topper rack for a 6' bed has 6 feet, spacers must be used in mounting the front and rear feet. I just used a stack of 4 washers in each location (32 washers in all) for a 1/4" rise at the ends. (Also, 1/4" longer bolts must be used there.) My rack also has the Cargo Basket option. See picture.

 

It will fit. Your topper dealer will flip the rails around then you can put prinsu rack on.
