255/75R17 on 1st gen?

Anyone have this tire size on their 1st gen 4x4?

I currently have

• 265/75R16's
• 16 x 7" wheel
• 15mm offset

and want to bump up to a 17" wheel to get load range C options

• 255/75R17
• 17 x 7.5" Wheel
• 15mm offset

My concerns are stock UCA clearance with a wider wheel (my calculations show that this wider wheel will sit 7mm closer to the UCA).

 

I wish wheel manufactures would use backspacing more often, not offset. I don't care about offset. I care about the clearance to the inside of the wheel (i.e. backspace). Backspace tells you the inside clearance regardless of wheel width.

your calcs sound about right. It depends on what kind of lift you have (or don't have). You'd probably be fine if you're at stock height, but I know people have had problems if they give it too much of a lift and make the suspension droop too much (where you'd get interference.

You can either get wheel spacers or aftermarket UCAs to correct for it IF it's a problem.

You can try taking some measurements on your current wheels. Jack the truck up and let the suspension fully droop, then measure your clearnece.

 

I have the OME suspension with stock upper/lower control arms. It's supposed to be ~2.5" lift from stock height (I got more like 4" lift from the worn out suspension when I bought the truck). I think going from my current wider tire to a slightly taller but narrower I should be ok.

If you can take a few measurements at full droop, that should help ease your mind.

Worst case is you need new upper control arms and yo have a silly excuse for some Total Chaos UCAs...

 

I’ve been contemplating the same either 265/70r17 or 255/75r17 on either 5th gen 4Runner trail wheels I think they are 4.5” backspacing or 4th gen 4Runner wheels which are 5.5” backspacing? both are 17x7.5.

 

More backspacing would make the likelihood of contacting the UCA worse, especially an inch more...

 

Guess it helps that I have SPC control arms. More or less curious on the tire size wheel combo.

 

FYI - my specs in the original post are for the 5th gen 4runner Trail wheels.

You're both right, they switched to the spoke style for later years...

I have to run 1.25" spacers on the front to clear the sidewalls on 295/70R17s and Trail Edition wheels. Not sure if the narrower tire would clear or not.

 

2ng Gen Tacoma, 3rd Gen T4R and newer ALL have 5.25" backspacing, making the wheels closer to the UCA. They were designed with more room. 1st Gens had 4.5" BS wheels.

I am using 1st Gen Tundra 17's that have 4.5" BS and 255/75-17 without issues and at least 1.5-2" of clearance, I am also running the OME kit

Yeah, the ones I posted are 2010-2013 5th gen Trail.

Can you provide some more details on your suspension setup in this picture? I have an '03 DCSB 3.4 Taco with stock suspension, but I've got my hands on a set of FJ Cruiser Steel 17" OEM wheels that I was planning on wrapping in 255/75/17 Geolander MT G003 tires... I'm trying to figure out what mild lift I need to achieve to fit them on the truck... also your rig looks SHARP...

I have the OME ~3" lift kit (really 2.25-2.5") but that pic was pretty much after install so no real settling yet

Remember the newer '05+ rims sit further inward so they will rub sooner and may actually rub the UCA depending on tire

 

Hey OP, did you ever find a good rim to run with 255/75R17? Looking to do the same on son's 02 2.7L with bilsteins in front (wanting load range C). Thanks
