It doesn't sound like the calipers are dragging on the rotor which is what you and Zane are both suggesting it seems.

 

Well you aren't the one buying so I guess I'm in the clear haha. You'd have sold the SC in my shoes too I bet. It adds no real sale value to the truck but it's a valuable chunk of aluminum on it's own.


I'm not suggesting the caliper is dragging now, I think it might just be cheapo rotor if the one from the other side doesn't net the same result.

Nope, no running with just the rotor (when it was not snugged down).

 

I have to agree with Monte on this one, the truck was way more interesting to me with the SC on it.

And @turbodb I agree with Zane, it is more likely a rotor issue.

edit: A wheel bearing failure typically manifests with a noise (think crunch, crunch,crunch) as the wheel rotates or or slop in the X and Y axis.

 

It's not really the rotor, it's the fact that when the lugs are tightened, the hub becomes hard to spin*. I guess I noticed it first when I was temporarily snugging up the rotor to install the caliper.

*hard to spin hub made me think of a wheel bearing, since that's what's spinning in the hub.

I think Zane and Mike are suggesting that maybe the rotor is tweaked, and so snugging it up (either with or without the wheel installed also) is causing other things to get pulled out of alignment or rub abnormally...thus making the hub hard to spin.

So, first step is to swap the rotor with the other one. If the problem persists, then there's something wrong with the hub/bearing. If the problem goes away, it's a rotor problem. ...at least in my mind.

Nice. It's a pretty easy job. I did both sides this morning in a little under 2 hours including clean-up and brake bleeding; assuming you don't run into some issue. I will say that the 4Runner is easier though, since it uses a hard brake line into the caliper. Strange the Taco is different...

 

I told you this, crack a bleeder open, push the pedal to the floor and use something to hold it there while you work on the brakes. The plunger won't let brake fluid out of the reservoir when it's in pressure position.

 

Yeah, seems strange to me that it would deform anything, esp. because the two lugs on the rotor aren't even torqued - they are just finger tight. So like 1 ft-lb, hahahaha. Anyway, we'll see tomorrow when I take everything apart again to install the suspension.

For brake fluid, get yourself some of these at your local parts store. When you remove the brake line at the frame (by the shock tower), put one of the caps on the hard line...as long as the cap is on, no fluid will come out. Which means you only have leakage when you're removing the old flexible line or installing the new one.

 

any bleeder, just to relieve pressure so you can get the pedal to the floor

 

Eh maybe. Idk. It's such a rare item that it probably would have helped you actually. That and it make those that want a v6 consider it more.

Also leaving the line in a cup with a little fluid helps.

 

I've never made that trick work, seems to always end up like a siphon and keep bleeding out.

We have a bunch of family that lives in Cheyenne and they all seem to enjoy it. Like everyone mentioned the winters can be rough, but Cheyenne doesn't necessarily see the worst of the cold either. While the SE Wyoming might not be what everyone thinks of when they think of Wyoming there's definitely some amazing places close. You cant beat proximity to all the good things CO has to offer without having to live there! The snowy range is one of the most underated as far as mountains in Wyoming IMHO, at least if you get off the beaten path. If Laramie is an option we loved it, the winters are probably some of the worst in the state but the summers easily make up for it. 85 degrees max, with cool evenings.
