    If you have pulled a U-Haul 6'X12' trailer -
What size ball mount (2"drop?) and ball did it need (2"?)

I have an '06 Prerunner Doublecab TRD Sport with the towing package, but I need to get a hitch/ball mount.

I have not pulled anything yet with my truck, the next thing I will pull is my '67 Mustang 'vert on a trailer to get some work done on it - it would be nice if I could get one hitch/ball mount to do it all.

    Thanks for any help.

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
    Usually everything is a 2 inch. My 16X9 is a 2 5/16 but thats a heavier grade.

The uhaul trailer will be a 2 inch ball though.

Yes I have; have you tried going on the u-haul website? On their website they have very good information on everything you will need.

    Go here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/towing/63131-renting-u-haul-will-they-let-me-hook-up.html
And go to post #2, will give more information too.

Yes, pulled one last year. 2" ball.

I tow all the time. You shouldn't have any problems. These trucks tow well.

Thanks - I did try their website, but I already reserved the trailer, and it would only show what hitches they had for sale, and that my vehicle would work (unless I just didn't get the right link) - but the link and post you shared was much clearer.

Thanks again - sounds like a 2" drop and 2" ball are standard - I am going to check prices at Wally World tomorrow.

I've pulled several of them at different times for several thousand miles in my last truck. They will fit either a 1 and 7/8" or 2" ball. They adjust to both. Also, make sure the trailer you get has fluid in the brake reservoir on the tongue; they have hydraulic brakes and I've rented a few where the brakes were bone dry. Made them find me another one close, or gave me a discount to go bleed some fluid through for them real quick.

Yeah the hitch I had was a 2" ball size, and I think the same drop. Also they sell the hitches there, that you will need. I'm not sure though if they are priced higher or less than other places.

On their website they had a pdf file you could open up that would give all the information for everything you would need, or at least the last time I was on there it had it. I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT: Here you go, they have information on this main page, under the "Advisements" section.

And the pdf file which also has the same and more useful information is under the "Trailer user instructions" section at the top of the page.

x2...it's a 2" ball. The standard draw bar drop is just fine. My truck's a 4-cyl and I pulled this for 700 miles without a problem...

pulled one from RI to VT last fall. we made it but the V6 didn't like the hills but it loved the gas.
NOTE: if you plan on taking the trailer off loaded, bring a jack as these trailers have no jack or wheel for dismounting and the tongue sits right on the ground. not an issue unloaded but loaded its a B.

Sorry to dig this one back up, but it is similar to my situation. I rented a 6 by 12 uhaul to move my 1 bedroom apartment and will be picking it up next week.

My tacoma is a 2008 PreRunner SR5 TRD Sport with NO tow package.

My plan was to purchase the ball from Uhaul as well. I'm hearing great things about how well these trucks tow and I have not done anything like this before.

Any thoughts or words of reassurance? Can my truck tow a trailer like this without the factory tow package?

You definitely need to get a trailer wire harness installed. You can pull off the bumper, i just don't know what it's rated for.

I was told that all that was needed was a flat 4 pin, which I believe I have the 7 pin adapter. I figure the converter from autozone will work. Or am I missing something?

You have a 7 pin plug? But no tow package? That is odd. A factory mounted 7 pin harness/plug? As far as I knew that was something that is either added after or comes with the tow package.

So in other words your truck looks like this:

you'll be fine... load the trailer correctly. Not all the weight on the tongue, not all the weight in the rear.
Drive steady and give yourself LOTS of braking room.

Exaclty! I have a hitch/ball from harbor freight tools I installed just to haul large grill for a company function and it worked fine however that hitch is far too cheap in order to haul a larger trailer.

My plan would be to purchase a uhaul hitch/bl, slide it in, possibly hook up my converter from 7 pin to 4 pin and roll on. I just want to make sure my truck can handle it. I don't see a problem myself, then again that's why I'm consulting the experts.

just look in the grill... if you have a small 2nd radiator, you have the "towing package"

Yea. 2" ball. Wired up a harness in the parking lot. Pulled it with the bumper.

Don't do either of those things. The bumper isn't rated for that much weight.

Yep, I tow a lot and I would never think of pulling from the bumper. I know, I know, people will flame me for it, but I have taken that bumper off personally and nope, no way. Not to mention, the trailer would be so not level. Make sure the trailer is as close to level as possible.

JFicek, you will be absolutely fine towing that trailer with your truck.
