Do we really need oil changes every 5K?

My 2019 Taco got lifetime changes when I bought it. I take it to the dealer every 5k or 6 months, just costs me time, plus the kids get free popcorn and slushies in the waiting room. My corolla gets changed by me every 10k with 0-20 full syn. I always use Toyota filters. Never no too dark oil.

I use Royal Purple. Great company. They really love me, my padlocks, my mom, and my truck. I would die for their oil. They especially love my mom.

I don't have a problem going 15k with a quality synthetic. 12 months is the limit, though. Even Amsoil says their 24k mile Signature oil is limited to 12 months.

For differential gear lubes, manual trans, I've always used Amsoil synthetic. 100k/10 years, 50k/5 years towing.

SERVICE every 5k, which is basic inspection and tire rotation. OIL and FILTER CHANGE every 10k.

I'm at 19k on the clock, and I'm about to schedule an oil change... I checked the dipstick last weekend and the oil still looked very new. I'm quite impressed.

The problem with the 5K, non oil change, service is you really have to trust the mechanic to actually do all the things on the checklist. They are supposed to check drivetrain bolt torque values, wheel bearing condition, brake condition, etc based on the actual list.

The problem is, often they don’t do the full list, and it’s very hard to tell what they did for the money you are paying them (if you are not on the free plan).

I have a mid-change service coming up and my dealer called me. I asked them what was due at this interval, and the person had no idea whatsoever. They went back and talked to the mechanic and came back to the phone and told me “tire rotation and brake inspection”. OK.......$185.00......GTFO. I told them if they did the full inspection as per the list provided in the manual, I might consider it, but wasn’t going to pay that sum to have my tires moved around.

I change oil every 5k. I got a friend who’s a tech at Toyota. It doesn’t hurt the truck so might as well

    'fluid inspection'
They top off if low lol.

    It's just a money grab.

I've done two of those black stone tests one at the recommended change and one early.

Both times tests showed the oil was fine and even at the 10k still had life to it.

I have no doubt the 5k service is a money grab but I'm still on my free services (last one coming up) so haven't had to decide whether to do the 5k interval or not. I'm 50/50 primarily because I'm lazy and the tire rotation is sort of worth it.

I saw a CL ad for a Taco "...changed oil every 3k miles and used only premium fuel since delivery..."

The first 25K on my truck I did every 5K. I am now going on 8000-ish miles without an oil change, I did check it at both 5000 and 7500 and color was still a good amber and level was still good. I am going to change it at 10K no matter how it looks. (piece of mind) and I change my own oil and tire rotation. I think it may differ between people's driving habits, towing and a lot of other variables. Just use your best judgment. I mean I don't let my gas tank get below half a tank. Only seen the gas light three times when I run gumout every 15K through an entire tank.
My opinion is check it every few thousand miles and a personal preference to not go longer than 10K, but if you do just check it.

This is pretty easy to document. Buy their oil and their filter at the dealer. Have parts enter the milage on the sale order receipt its already date marked. The filter and oil is 48$ far less then what you'd pay them to change it. Same goes for drivetrain fluids by from them while in warranty.

Change it as much as you want. Buy Walmart Supertech 0W20 which has better specs than Mobil 1 and cheaper, much cheaper at about $3/qt.

DIY $20 synthetic oil changes as good as it gets.
