    Mornin,

So i have a 19 DCSB and my only grip is the lack of space. Additionally, I have a bird dog I take with me many places and currently put him in a kennel in the bed when the family is loaded up for a trip.

Im thinking a topper will give me the ability to safely store more in the bed space as well as having a better place for the dog to ride.

With that said, I see so many toppers being re-sold used for a loss. Why get rid of them so fast? Is there some major downfall to owning one that I haven't considered?

Interested to hear any responses, thanks!

    There are pros and cons.

Pros are best weather barrier, security, and storage.

Cons are can’t haul big or tall items, side and rear bed access very limited, cost.

Me personally I bought a truck for the bed. Once you put a camper on it it’s basically a suv. Since I already have an suv I have zero use for a topper.

Just make sure you want one before you spend the money that’s all and be happy with it.

You should get a softopper. then you have the best of both worlds. Plenty of enclosed bed space but you can also easily remove it by yourself in a few minutes if you need the bed open. Plus its 1/3 the cost.

It's just harder to get stuff in and out of the bed since you have to climb in to grab stuff at the back. Some people keep a hook in there to pull stuff out with. It also sucks hauling wood and bikes with a camper shell on. It is definitely nice for dogs though. My past two trucks both came with shells, and I took them both off after a while because it seemed inconvenient. I sold the shell from the last one, the first one I kept until I sold the truck.

I think it all comes down to your use case. If you are using it for hunting/camping, I think you'll like it. It keeps your stuff locked up and out of the elements.

    Cons:
    • Heavy
    • Lots of space to store when removed
    • additional weight to rear end
    • Need to remove to haul large (tall) items
    • Will probably want bed stiffeners
    Pros:
    • Waterproof (ish)
    • More Secure than softopper
    • can get reinforced to hold rack and things
    • tons of extra dry storage in bed
    • can sleep in

A cheaper option for you might be to buy a waterproof or insulated kennel cover to keep the pup dry.

As for shells, I went with a softopper. Folds down in a few seconds or comes off completely in under a minute. Stores pretty small & flat if I wanted it off. Looks pretty cool also.(my photos attached) https://www.softopper.com/

As far as why people sell them for a loss, I would assume it mostly has to do with weight & storage if you're not using it. Once it's on, it's on there. If you want to take it off you gotta build a hoist or call a friend and then give up 1/4 of your garage or find a spot for it. If someone sells a vehicle, they'll also want to sell the topper separately to either make up some cash or because it wont fit new truck.

Now that retrax has the rail system it makes customizing the bed even better. Having rails on the top of the truck like a prinsu makes it very hard to load and unload stuff.

I had a topper on a previous pick-up and my biggest "con" was visibility. I found it a lot harder to see out of the back of the truck.

Oh and you can’t enjoy the awesome feature of an open sunroof and rear window breeze anymore.

Awesome info guys, thanks! there is a guy up the road in Wyoming selling a Tan Softtopper for $500 and it looks to be in excellent condition, this may fit the bill better than $2500 topper

Tan on Tan might look a little weird. Most guys with the soft toppers go for the contrast, but don't let that stop you from doing what you want.
