Maybe look at something like this- i have loved it and spent many a comfortable night in it. (its for sale over at expedition portal- working on geting my 50 pposts so i can add it here)

I’m a light-weight camper in general so mounting and building the living room on my truck is still a bit over the top for me. [pun intended].

I like to be able to leave my site easily too.

Of course the luxury is forgone for these convenances. If it’s the only way to get the wife/kids to go then, well, decision is made.

 

I think the consensus is if your willing to spend the money, have a place and means to remove it when not in use, and want something a little bit different. Go for it.

Another thing that hasn’t been mentioned, beers and the ladder can get a little messy for the late night post pass out leak.

 

Fair point, but when we go out I often take my telescope and my wife brings her astrophotography gear. Dogs go in the back seat. Between the two of us, the bed is fairly full. Leaving that gear outside is not an option.

I love my RTT. I have a Tepui Kukenam 3. I disagree with it being a pain in the ass compared with a ground tent. I lived in mine for 8 weeks on my way up through the Yukon, another 6 weeks the summer before through the Rockies to Banff, I've taken another 4-5 weeks with it in Baja. It's not a $6-10K camper so some trade-offs for sure. Namely, the cover. It's always going to get you filthy when you setup, but you're camping..who cares. Tepui has kicked ass in terms of customer support. I've had my tent for 3 years now and when I break a zipper on the cover, they replace it. Tear the cover on branches, they replaced it, etc..

 

I’ve left my tent on all winter and no mold, no funky smells, everything looks great inside. And the tent is quick to setup. Unzip the cover, unvelcro the side straps and grab the ladder and unfold it. Done. That’s maybe 5min alone if that. Give me another 5 minutes if you want the windows open with the poles

 

I had one one the truck for a month and spent a total of 3 nights in it. I hated it, and ended up selling it for a $1 profit. So if you're interested, it's not hard to resell if you end up not liking it. Here's what I didn't like about it, and not all these apply to everyone.

• Set up was not as easy as people make it seem on the forum. I can set up a ground tent as fast as that thing.
• I had it on my camper shell, and it acted like a parachute. I could really feel it up there on the highway.
• With it that high, it made off camber situations off road way more precarious.
• That fucking ladder. God I hated climbing in and out.
• Can't store sleeping bags and pillows in it without putting too much stress on the hinge. So still need to pack those separate, which take up bed space.
• Not being able to drive after it's set up.
• Couldn't get my giant dog in there, and he didn't like sleeping in the cab if I was in the tent.
• Having to level the truck was annoying, and also finding a large enough area to park that could fit it while deployed.

I've since been using either a coleman ground tent/cot/sleeping pad which is fucking COMFY, or just sleep in the bed of my truck since I have a camper shell.

 

Who fucking cares. Get one if you want one. Or don’t. I don’t care. I’m going back to sleep.

Can I rewire my main harness with extension cord wire?
Is a plastic piece of shit from China the same as this engineered and warrentied OEM part?
Can I do a high quality 3” lift with a cheap block of wood and why does it now vibrate?

 

why are my mpgs so low
