So here is a response based on experience and not personal bias based solely on opinion and not experience(edited to keep the peace).
I will agree that there are a lot of rtt's being sold to fad following types and those that want the look. This is an waste of money for sure.
I had a CVT Mt. Hood for three years and sold it and the rack two years ago. I have regretted it every since and will be purchasing another rtt shortly. As I have a short bed, this one will be small so as not to exceed the length of the bed.
I liked using the rtt as it allows for camping where there may not be space for a ground tent.
Using some intelligence and muscle (I'm a big guy) I had no problem installing or removing the 140lbs tent by myself. A garage ceiling hoist added later made the job super easy and took care of storage as well.
Set up took me less than 10 min and take down less than 15. Again, that was by myself. I will say that I only installed the annex once. That was a bit of a hassle and adds a good amount of time to the process.
Consider all the pros and cons and what your needs are. There are some good ones listed here from those that actually have owned one.

ANOTHER pro of a RTT - you're off the ground.

 

I agree set up and break down are not as easy as I expected but after a few tries I've become pretty fast and I do it by myself, plus mine is so high up I have to stand on the sliders or the tires to be able to reach it to set it up. But for what I use it for it's been great.

It's bigger than any ground tent I've owned and It's held up great in heavy rain. Plus even after closing it up in the morning after it rained all night when I went to set it up again that night the inside was still 100% dry, which was pretty impressive. I like the comfort of it way more than any ground tent. I keep mine on all year round and don't have any issues other than not fitting in parking garages. I also like that I can keep a ton of stuff in my bed still, which I couldn't fit if I had some sort of sleeping platform in the bed. The ventilation with all the windows open is amazing as well, you get a nice cross wind that keeps you cooler in the morning when you'd be baking hot in a ground tent IMO.

I race dirt bikes so it's perfect for me. I set it up when I get to the track and only take it down when I'm done for the weekend.

Fitting under some trees has proved to be a bit of nuisance but you just need a few buddies to stand on your sliders and bumper some times :

I've had a Tepui Kukenam for a couple years and LOVE it, looking at upgrading to a hardhsell one now. As others have mentioned they're pretty easy to resell and hold value pretty well so I wouldn't be too worried about getting one if you can afford it. I bought mine used for $1k and I'm confident I could sell it within a few days for $800 after getting years of camping out of it.

One nice thing I haven't seen mentioned is you can keep all your bedding/pillows inside of it, so when I decide to sleep for the night I'm 1 minute away from clean, dry comfort anywhere I can park my truck.

I've been camping for 25 years used a ground tent probably 1,000+ nights no shame in going RTT I've spent plenty of cold and rocky nights on the ground and still do when we hike in.

Some people said they're not as fast as ground tents, thats BS unless they have one of those crappy instant popups. My tepui takes 1 minute to deploy, my ground tents are 5+, not a crazy difference but its silly to say RTTs are slower. The new hardshells I'm looking at deploy in literally seconds.

Also if you're a single guy wanting to take a lady out in the woods most women really love the comfort and "security" of an RTT, if they're not into the outdoors they'll be much more likely to enjoy it if you have an RTT. My girlfriend likes glamping so the RTT is a nice transition, she'll still join me on the ground but we sleep better when in the RTT.

Way worse things to spend your money on, whether you use it a lot or just a few times.

 

Just wait for one season and all of the insta "influencers" will be selling theirs to jump on the next big thing...
