Great thread. I would never get one. I don't know about you guys, but when I camp, I drink beer, lots of it. And I piss a lot. Do you really want to climb down that little ladder at night to piss? My drunkass will get hurt. I had a buddy who was too drunk to climb back up the ladder so he slept on the ground with a blanket over him.

I drink a lot of beer when I camp too, not going to lie it does suck to have to get up and climb down to pee but it sucks in general to have to pee at night while camping, even in a regular tent. Also half the time I just unzip the entrance and piss onto the ground from inside the tent lol.

Just piss in a large gatorade bottle. Or get a wide mouth funnel and a hose that runs out the tent, and piss in that. Just don't tell your friends about it or they could kink the hose shut and you're in for a bad time

I must move slow. The one I had was like 15 minutes to setup (23zero Byron).

not all rtt (made in china), but the ones with the most instagram following brands are all from China (not saying its bad)

i had a eezi awn (one of the original rtt makers) from south africa, well built and very durable (does not cause condenstaion (wood floor) compared to aluminum and insulates better) but its just inconvenient if you have it on your truck, especially if you deciede to go to a national park and want to drive to certain hikes, you have to unload, load, unload, load every day your there, can be a pain.

if i had a trailer then having a rtt would be ideal, but i went back to ground tent, (look into spring bar if you want something very durable)

First, if you live in So-Cal you can sell a RTT used in a few days. So the person saying "offloading it is hard" or whatever - I doubt it. The overlanding hype is too high right now.

Is a RTT worth it? Ask yourself these questions:
    1. Do you have money to spend on one?
    2. Do you sleep like shit on the ground?
    3. Are you scared of animals? (You don't know how many people use this as a reason)
    4. Does weight matter to you?
    5. Does setup/break down time matter to you?
    6. Do you camp enough to justify the cost?
    7. Do you camp in windy areas? Raining? Snowing?

I see SO many people buying them and then selling them soon after because they barely use them. Personally, I would not buy one if I didn't camp at least 20 nights per year or do multiple day trips. I think that having a tent that is easier to setup and I don't have to assemble the tent with poles and stakes is so nice - I hated spending 10-12 minutes putting the tent together, staking it, then it being windy that night and it just being a shit show. Tent camping when it's raining blows. I've woken up with a soaked tent on the ground - None of those issues on the roof.

With a RTT I can setup in what...3 minutes. Jump in and bam - sleep. I usually arrive late to camp as I'm traveling or hiking/running and it's easy to set it up in the dark. Quick, efficient, and nice. That being said if you need to move your truck when camping, etc. a RTT is not for you. To move your truck on *most* tents you have to refold it/collapse it just to move a few feet.

Overall, it's a luxury. You don't need one. You want one. You don't have to spend $3k on one, just buy a Smittybilt on sale for $600 and call it a day. People who spend insane amounts of money on one...well I don't understand it but to spend $4,500 on a tent to use it once a year is stupid in my opinion.

I have over 50 nights in a RTT easily (probably close to 80ish) and double that in a regular tent.

I love my RTT. :drunk:. Just got back from a 2.5 week trip a few months back. I was asleep before my buddy had his ground tent thrown up and bedding inside. Now given I wouldn't pay the average pricing of $1500+ for one, but I don't need a front porch on one. However, my $700 Smittybilt one is perfect for me. Have had it for 2 years now and will probably keep it a bit longer.

I love mine, but hate being stuck on camp with it. I prefer to get out and wheel, so I need to fold it back up each time. The only annoying piece.

Am I enjoying my RTT? Yes.
Will I buy another when it wears out? No.
Will I sell it before it wears out? No
Will I have gotten my money's worth? Yes, already have.
What will I replace it with? A topper with raised sleeping platform is my first choice. If money is tight I'll get a tent/cot combination.
Why? as mentioned before, they can be a pain to take the covers off/on and you can't move until you break camp. Don't really like keeping it on all the time but too heavy to take off.

I will apologize. Apparently I am a little antagonist today.
I again made a mistake and left my standard threads. Lol
However, anyone who states opinions as facts and generalizes that for everyone, is an ass hat. Due to this last sentence, I have become an ass hat as well!

    Well there's your problem.

If you think a RTT or literally just about anything else in the entire world that you can spend your money on is an investment, you've lost already.

I have a reinforced camper shell and I would have my dogs in the bed of the truck at night. I just got back and was able to read all of the comments.
