Disconnected battery and now wont idle..help

I have a 2009 4 cyl manual 170k. The battery was dead this morning, light was left on, I disconnected the battery and charged it in the garage. When I reinstalled it and started the truck it will no longer idle, just dies right away.

I have never had this problem or anything remotely similar. I watched a video on youtube where the guy said you have to reset the throttle. That didnt work for me unfortunately.

Anyone else had this happen and know a good solution? Thanks!

 

Just drive it a little, the computer has to relearn. It will stop that. It’s fine

Battery may not be able to sustain running the engine. Kinda hard to drive it a little if it dies right away. Might try getting a new battery.

 

How much did you charge the battery?

What is the current voltage on the battery?

If the battery is charged enough to start it, the alternator should take over and supply power to the engine and battery for charging.

So it cranks, turns over, starts for a second then does or it won't even turn on?

 

OP stated Engine Dies. Kinda hard to take it for a drive with an engine that ain't spinning.
Battery gotta keep the engine going long enough for the alternator to spin up to generate enough to keep it spinning.

 

OP also stated that it is running on a battery. Aka the alternator isn't working......ya kinda need it to run an engine and recharge the battery.

A bit more clarification will hopefully help.

 

Alternator is probably fine but battery cant keep the engine going long enough for it to take over. Agree more info is needed. But most likely that battery cant give enough juice to keep the engine spinning for the alternator to take over.

 

No, he stated it wouldn’t idle, he needs to get in, start it and go, go quickly like a bunny.

 

Also, if you don't have the tow package (130amp alt) then a nearly depleted battery will put too much of a strain on the alternator and kill the voltage regulator. This will force the battery to take on the full load and drain it again.

As many know, you never let an alternator try and charge a nearly depleted battery.

 

If the alt is good and the battery can't turn it then it looks like the battery wasn't charged enough or was discharged too much and won't charge anymore.

Probably is the right choice to get a new battery.

 

Wouldn't hurt to take the alternator for a free test at o'reillys. If your alternator kicked the bucket you won't run long on a battery, especially a drained one.

 

Jumping may be a good option to get it over to do the test. Other vehicle can keep it going long enough to self-sustain. Just until it gets up to speed.

 

This is why I bought a good multimeter. Now I can test the alt, battery, parasitic draws, etc.

True. You can get it to start, then take the leads off and if it dies the alt is also bad.

But won't that put a double load on the other cars alt?

 

Not for a super long time. Just a few extra seconds connected up.

 

Yea, I can keep it at idle manually and drive it, but as soon as I let off the accelerator when changing gears or braking at a stop light it dies. It’s really tough to drive it very far and get a decent charge. Although I doubt the battery is the problem because it starts right up, just wont idle on its own

 

Is this the first time you have had a dying issue? The dead battery may have jacked your voltage regulator. Probably both alt and batt now.

 

Do your dash lights flicker right before it dies?
