First let me say I have taken the Truck to Toyota and they do not know what is wrong with it!!!

Now with that said. I have 2005 6spd toyota tacoma TRD pckg V6 92,000 miles on her. CEL came on about 3 months ago it is reading a p0173 code. I replaced the MAF I replaced the heated oxygen sensor ( above the cat converter)all with OEM parts. CEL light still on. I have had it two mechanics, they couldn't find the problem. I broke down took it to Jerry's Toyota In MD they had it told me they could not figure it out, the gas smelled week. They told me two run a higher grade of fuel then wanted to charge me 95.00 ha ha I told them to eat $h%t. So i was on my second tank of higher grade fuel, when the light went off for 1 day and then came back on and stayed on. It is bogging a little when I am in 3 or 4th gear accelerating then runs fine when she catches up. any thoughts?

just curious if you have a cold air intake?? try cleaning the maf sensor!! also......its possible that one of the spark plugs may be cracked, or that you may have a cat. converter thats starting to fail. try cleaning the maf sensor first.

    If your gas cap tight?

    Stranger things have happened....
I know on the 1st gen trucks, a loose gas cap sets off a CEL sometimes.

    So what does p0173 mean?
    That might explain it.

If not, break the light, change the oil and drive her another couple hundred thousand miles.

I mean seriously If Toyota doesn't know whats wrong with it WTF! they built it right?

Long shot but if you're ecu/ecm is starting to go a little crazy it can say its a MAF malfunction. Happened in my 03 corolla as well as my brothers 07 corolla (possibly just a corolla thing, but it sounds similar).

    P0173 - Powertrain: Fuel Trim Bank 2

What about disconnecting the battery for a little while & reconnecting? Doesn't this reset the ecu?

    Found this info on Google:

"Usually P0170 and P0173 mean your Mass Air Flow Sensor took a crap. However, it can also be caused by vacuum leaks, etc."

"P0170 (right bank)& P0173 (left bank) are fuel trim codes.
Check for vacuum leaks, air intake leaks (air cleaner tube), incorrect fuel pressure, bad fuel pressure regulator or faulty injectors. "

Ok, follow-up CEL light is still on
but could I be getting this code from the cat converter I now notice a deep like humming sound when I start the truck up and accelerate and it is still bogging when I accelerate. Maybe Toyota missed that the converter was going up? anything else?

Is that the ONLY code your getting?
That code is quite common for a bad MAF. Being as you said you have a new one, Im not sure what else it could be. Did you check all the vaccume lines?

Had to have both front cats replaced on my '05 when the truck only had less than 30,000 miles on it. That meant both manifolds and cats.

I don't know if this applies to Tacoma's but I had the same problem on an old chevy truck I owned many moons ago. It didn't have a CEL, but would bog down every time I tried to give it gas.

Several mechanics looked at it and I had them tell me everything from I need a new transmission to new heads.

Turned out to be a fuel filter. It was restricting flow to the engine and it would starve the engine of fuel.

That very well could be the issue. Not sure if it would throw a code.

ok, is the new MAF bad? Never answered the question even though it was wrong but you knew what I meant.

Do the ol' Electrical Tape mod and you'll be able to sleep better, I know I will.

a vacuum leak should give a bad idle and shouldn't really cause the bogging down when at speed. A clogged cat should come up as a cat inefficient code. Perhaps the wiring TO the maf? Can you run the car with the MAF unplugged? See if it changes driving character. I know on GM cars you can unplug it and it will go to default tables (and obviously throw a code).

What does gas smelling weak mean?
