Favorite Whiskey?

Just found a bottle of Bookers Kentucky Chew at a local liquor store. Asking $120 for it. I want to try it but I dont think I want it that bad.

 

Guys I have discovered that I really enjoy super peaty scotches.

Something about the way all that mossy-wood flavor hits you makes me feel like I'm sitting around a campfire with my truck friends.

So because of that, I have to add Ardbeg to the top of my list. Got a bottle of 10 year I'm working my way through at a comfortable pace

 

As mentioned it is one of many different "recipes" Four Roses puts out. I had tried Small Batch then the regular Single Barrel, with the regular small batch better in my opinion. But then I tried the OBSV Single Barrel and it was so much better than the others. While it does have rye in it (35%) to me I don't get spicy at all; nothing like Pikesville or Rittenhouse. But since it is single barrel each bottle can be slightly different.

 

How do you figure out what recipe it is? I just finished off a small batch and would love to try that single barrel.

 

This breaks down the letter codes. I've found distillers will offer (somewhat) unique versions to stores to sell with their label on them. As you can see in the pic this was Total Wines deal, but there are many others. For <$50 it's a great deal IMHO. They have a "special" high proof WhistlePig that is probably my favorite thing to drink, so far, but it's pretty expensive so I've only had it twice.

Hey now.. That was the lady's reminders to her self... Not a subtle note carefully left in front of my whiskey to tell me to take care of her cat.. I think

 

Mine has certainly changed since I started trying many different types of good quality Scotch, bourbon, rye and other whiskies. Used to be just Jack and Coke or shots of brown liquor that burns, but not anymore. You just gotta try a lot!

Speaking of kitties, one of my SWMBO's cats is giving me a dirty look as I type this...

ok i think price needs to be stated here.

octomore is like 150+.

the frog 10 is the most affordable and a damn decent dram can be had for 40 - 55.

laguvlin 16 was great when it was 60, at least in my area its 110+.
laguv 8 is really good and can be had generally cheaper and easy to find as well.

bunna 12 i think is the best value islay scotch you can get, but is very light on peat.

 

I don't know his price range and if he wants he can check them out. They are all worth learning about it he's not familiar with them. Most are very popular and widely available. Bottom line, these are just good heavily peated whiskies. Which is what he said he likes.

 

I guess I dont want him going out asking for octomore wtf 200 dollars and looking like a fool..

And, like you say he didnt mention price range, but ive found most guys going to whiskey forums saying "hey I like peat" aint gonna drop 150+ for a bottle without making sure they really like it. If they were they wouldn't be here on TW talking about it, know what I mean?

Trading forums are a God send.

But then again I'm all about value, and at the same time I bought all the glendronach in like a 50 miles radius of where I live..

I don't think you're giving the man much credit. Take it easy dude I'm not trying to take advantage of anyone, they are just suggestions to help the man out...It's not like I'm forcing him to go buy them...

Btw, Lagavulin 16 is like $70-80 at bevmo, cheaper at Costco so...widely available. I don't know what store your looking at, but if they're charging $200 I would be very wary of any prices in that shop...enjoy your whiskey forum. I'm out.

 

laguvlin 16 is 116 where i am sucks. I have a couple of buddies that I trade with that will generally pick me up a bottle and ship to me and it will be around 80.
Octomore is the pricey one I have seen it range from 150- 250 ~.

17, in my case, for Bourbon/Rye/Irish.

Early-20's for mild Scotch, mid-20's for the peatier Islay-style Scotch.

The Four Roses one lets you plug in different recipes to see the resulting flavor profile.

Your Small Batch is a blend of 4 different recipes (both mashbills with 2 different yeast strains each).

The standard yellow label is a blend of all 10 recipes - which makes sense as that would lend itself to a more consistent product.

The standard single barrel is always OBSV.

You can, however, get private selections of the single barrel barrel proof that will be one of any of the 10 recipes. It is pretty remarkable how different some of them can taste!
