2 things they should incorporate in the Tacoma.

    The Hilux engine:

Diesel is the way to go. I have no idea why there are not as many diesels in the U.S. market. They can get way better mileage and can be cleaner burning than gas. I just looked at the average diesel consumption and it was somewhere around 28mpg for the Hilux Diesel. Americans see hybrid as the way to go and it just simply is not. VW has a diesel golf that gets nearly 75mpg and can get 900 miles to the tank! Thats way better than all the hybrids out there. It's about time that the U.S. moves away from diesel just being for the big trucks and goes to diesel being for everything. I would totally buy a diesel Tacoma if they made one.

Not sure this is the thread I listed my comments in but VW makes a diesel mid size truck called the AMAROK. The engine is the same one in the jetta and Golf. I would think Toyota would want to get out front before all this hits...but they're marketing guys are smarter than me...so I have to think its something to do with their market surveys....

x2...I don't really get the feel that many of our Toyota Brethern are that familiar with a diesel and what it will do and how it will run. I didn't until I owned one. It's a 2004 Jetta TDI and I never thought a four cyl could run or pull like mine does. I will say Rocket Chip did a little work on the computer but hey...I aint cleaning crap out of the engine...currently I run around 150HP with an engine that came from the factory with 100HP. If the Germans can do it I know Toyota can do it and probably better. VW is out with a 6 spd auto (DSG) I truly believe if Toyota would start working on getting the MPG's up they could do it with the xmsn and probably some other neat little tricks I bet they have up their sleeves. I believe TRD could even get involved and offer a host of after market items as well.

I voted for diesel only. As much as I would love to see a solid axle, I would fear that it would be underengineered for the tasks I would demand of it (see my 1985 toyota). If I want a solid axle, I would just do a SAS with a diamond or d60 and load it up the way I want. In effect, the cost would be in line with what any premium Toyota may charge for their solid axle 'package'
