Sometimes she wants to ride bikes with me.

All she does is ride in a straight line forever until she stops and then we have a picnic.

    There aren’t even any jumps.

Every once in a while I start thinking that a RTT would be cool. Better mattress, easier set up (maybe).

But then I start thinking about the hassle of taking it off the truck or having to drive around with it all the time, the cost, the inability to jump in the truck and drive to a trailhead or fishing spot without packing up, no tent to mark my campsite as occupied if I do drive off for a bit, etc.

While I can sort of see the appeal, in the end I just don't see the point. Maybe I'll just get a better mattress for my tent.

Nay. It's fine on the roof but over priced. I'd never put one over the bed. I mean come on. There's no lions around here and I don't want to fall off the ladder at 2 am to wiz. I need my truck as a real truck to haul so the bed needs to be open. I like simple setups. I think spending thousands just to camp, a simple activity, doesn't make sense. I'd go for an instant ground tent (gazelle or equal) or a soft topper on a long bed with a drawer setup and sleep in there. Easy to remove when needed. If you don't haul large items and really want a full time mounted shell/bed, a clamshell camper like the Vagabond would be cool. Still $6k? Yikes.

I'm with you dead on. I'm going to buy an instant tent (takes under a minute) and a buddy heater for right before bed and when we wake up. Also got a luxury camping pad with r-value 10 to stay warm and just as comfortable as a home mattress. Another thing not mentioned is sometimes I ride with my friends so my gear has to be portable and not attached to a particular vehicle.

Never heard of an instant ground tent so I Googled it. After looking at a few I won't be buying one of those either.

Living in Canada and nowhere near the interior deserts or southern prairies I have no use for an RTT to avoid potential insects, arachnids or snakes. Anything where I live can and will get into an RTT if it wants to. Might as well keep it cheaper and lighter and buy a sturdy ground tent from MSR or Mountain Hardwear that can be useful for backpacking as well as car camping. Plus I like my fuel economy too much to create that much drag.

Problem with that would be backing down a two track when I get to a point where you can’t go any further.

I'm guessing its light enough that you could unhook it and move it by hand... not ideal, but doable.
