Yeah. Some are janky. I'm looking at the Gazelle. Already have a Kelty 2 person but it's too small for my now family of 3. Honestly a comfy mattress, pillow, and warm bag are what really makes a nice setup. The tent or shelter doesn't matter as much to me as long as it's dry and mosquito free. Backpacking, we usually cowboy camp under the stars!

My take is that RTTs sound like a really cool idea, but are actually stupid impractical. I believe that the main draw is the tickling of the childhood treehouse circuits in one's hippocampus.

Then you fall down the ladder in your underwear after crawling over your girlfriend to take a piss at 4am...

I think they are cool as hell, but I never off-road and don’t camp, either. I’m sure they don’t do your center of gravity any favors, either.

    oh bro. I as well
I have many sleeping bags including super high tech lightweight NF backpack bag

My favorite one right now though is a classic Coleman double wide that rolls into a duffle bag with big ass handles. It has unbelievable heavy weight flannel on the inside and bullet proof canvas outer. It weighs 600lbs. dry. you can roll around in it WITH someone else in that fucker.

I’m sure there are tons of replies to this one but clearly you don’t know what you are taking about.

I’ve camped since I was a kid and I’ve never once slept well until I got a rtt. It’s nice being able to pack everything up at once. Sleeping in is easy because it doesn’t turn into an oven at 8am like a normal tent.

Mine is about four years old. Guess how much mold it has? Zero. Taking care of things is easy. You’ll get a moldy ground tent just as easy as a roof tent if you don’t take care of either.

My deluxe mattress and blankets >>>> a foam pad and mummy bag. Any day.

I’m not exactly sure why you hate them? Did one touch you inappropriately? Are they too expensive? Are you just trying to be cool and want to fit in since hating rtt is the cool thing now?

As I said I’ve had mine a few years. Nothing wrong with it. I can take it on and off alone. The cover had some scuffs from rocks so I had to replace it. But other than that with the exception of upgrading the mattress and the cover I’ve yet to invest anything else into it.

I like it a lot more than a ground tent. Of which I’ve had probably 5-10different ones over my life. Unless something happens and I can’t climb the ladder anymore I’ll keep using it. :notsure:

No, I just have some good points to consider before fellas blow their dough. None of the above applies to my thoughts about these things.

Again, if you want a back slap, I give those for free.

I plan on buying a RTT, I love the outdoors, I love to camp. What I don’t love thanks to the Marine Corps is sleeping my ass on the ground. For that it’s worth it to me. Also when I move to the mainland I plan on driving across the country and don’t plan on staying in motels or hotels I’ll just stay in my tent.

    True.

For the record, I don’t have an anti-RTT vendetta. If one works for you, in the climate where you live, and you accept the negatives that come with ownership, I’m all for it. As far as I can tell there is no “it’s cool to hate RTTs club” (yet).

If I do have a agenda it’s to encourage people to spend less time and money buying endless “overland” shit they don’t need, to enjoy the outdoors, when they could (hopefully) translate that same money into more time off, or more fuel, to get out further or stay out longer.

You should not need a team of child labourers in Asia, working day and night, to make piles of crap you “need” to go camping. That’s missing the point, at least in my way of looking at things.

All this talk of falling down the ladder...has anyone actually ever done that? I've stumbled down mine with a more than healthy buzz in the middle of the night more times than I can count and I've never eaten shit on the ladder. Maybe I'm just too good at being drunk. Might be a sign to cut back.
