Honestly I love my RTT, its a Hard Shell, probably the cheapest on the market a "tentbox". It allows me to take my wife and 2 daughters out with little setup time [wife and I on top, girls in the bed w/shell (1 minute up, 2 minutes to take down). Set up a lift in the garage so I can put it on and take it off the roof in under 10 minutes and have it out of the way.
If it were just me, I probably wouldn't have a RTT. With the family it makes trips into the hills sooooo much nicer.

I've always thought RTTs seemed fun but it would probably not be used as often due to the hassle of loading it on my roof every time I want to do an overnighter. We bought a camper a couple years back and now we're selling it, too much money tied up in something we only use a couple times a year. Most of my trips lately are within a couple hours from the house and I'd rather sleep in my truck cap or take my backpacking tent than deal with the hassle of prepping the camper and having to find a spot large enough for it

Most of us just let them ride on the back rack year round. But obviously there's considerations if you need to put something tall in the back.

I'll be making a pulley system this year myself, although I only take it off once or twice a year for a few days

True, I leave my cap on year round but I have a rod vault (holds fly rods), kayak saddles, and a bike tray mount up there now, so I'd have to buy a second set of towers/bars to just hoist the whole package off there. I've been given the go ahead to buy one if I want after selling our camper, but I might invest in a nice ground tent instead. If I buy another camper I'll probably get an A-Liner or similar pop-up, but that'll be a ways down the road once we have more free time for camping.

That's all the reason I need. Seriously, I'd rather use my feet than my truck to get out in the backcountry. I do get the appeal (tree fort, Dormobile) but it's just not for me.

I use both. Gt and a RTT. Mainly for just that. Fishing and hiking trips Lots for ice fishing too. Just stay out on the lake. Lots of trips I'll use both. My Gt fits into a sack the size of a milk jug. But that's normally only if I'm going remote and have to hike in. Otherwise it's the RTT! IMG_20190215_213401.jpg

Thanks! We enjoy it. Not too many people over night on the lake that day. Ended up with a few 23" lake snakes and a 20" brown which is pretty good for that body of water

Unless you have a instant pop tent or what they are called from Walmart I can guarantee you I will have my RTT unzipped, opened and set up with a beer cracked before your tent is set up.. possibly would consider a Oz Tent. It is nice opening a queen bed that's already made though.

My truck isn’t my pride and I didn’t take 43 pics to pick out that one. Just snapped it after I got done shooting like 2 years ago for a new avatar for here

I got a 2-3 person pole tent, nothing fancy and it goes up in 5 minutes. Probably 1/30th of what you got invested into your RTT setup. Only think you got on it is Instagram points

I don’t know what most of the people here are smoking but I can set up my Tepui RTT way faster than my REI ground tent. And it’s a no contest if you count setting up a sleeping bag, mat, and pillow.

As most have pointed out, there are pros and cons, but I think a lot of folks are being fecitious and tearing things a bit out of proportion.

Personally, I’m loving my RTT, but it’s also not replacing my ground tent. I like the option to choose.

There is one con to RTT that no one has mentioned is that it’s hard to not be noticeable if you have sex in it, as your suspension will rock, alerting fellow campers. I guess it’s also a pro because sex in an RTT is way more fun than a ground tent.

Only reason I don't use a RTT is when camping I usually want to be using my truck for other stuff. Set up camp when I am hunting then use truck to get to trailheads or other places. Don't want to repack everything each time
