How long should an OEM battery last?

after 4 years, my 2011 battery got replaced (by me $$$) as a PM decision. the replacement battery lasted 11 months. died on a sunday morning so I jump-pack started it and brought it to the dealer (after calling). service advisor came into the waiting room 15 minutes after I sat down and handed me the keys.

as many grumblings as I hear about dealers, mine has been good enough to buy two trucks from, with a 4 year visit to the dark side (GMC), in between!

 

I've had batteries last 7 months, and others 7 years. With anything electrical they sometimes simply go bad early. Hot weather kills 'em faster. Living in north GA I see 5-6 years on average.

 

Mine lasted 13 months and 32K miles. Replaced with Costco AGM.

 

Yes China based components have no QA or intentionally used poor materials and failure rates are high. Demand the dealer warranty it. Good luck. We no longer have choices in supply chains so most crap is crap until we collectively stand up to distributors and it hits their bottom line.

Not too long ago we measured battery life in years, now it seams like months.

 

Don't want to jinx myself either, but my 2016 which I got in November of 2015 and 54K later, battery is still good

 

I had my 2004 SR5 15 years, it was on it's second battery. The OEM battery lasted 7 years. The second was a Duralast.

 

OEM battery is totally crap. Mine shit the bed at 8 months. Only good news is that Toyota paid for a new high quality battery bought from Advance Auto.

 

Was the battery electrolyte always covering the plates? Batteries requiring maintenance will outlast a maint-free battery but you have to keep filling with distilled water when low. Exposing those plates kills a battery.

Was it ever discharged more than 10% as in draining to the point it is slow or worse to start? Starting batteries can't handle that without sulfation which kills a battery. Copper and lead batteries must keep charged to 100% to last the longest.

Heat is terrible on a battery and putting it in the engine bay on a hot Florida day also kills it. You have no choice here.

 

My 92 toyota truck had the same battery for about 8 years - Panasonic.
Buy a new one from Costco- I think they have a good warranty if it shits out.

 

I have always had good longevity from Toyota batteries. Our 2013 Avalon has the same 24F as the Tacoma and is still going strong after 6 years.

 

2016 battery lasted 18 months in phoenix but thats normal for a low end battery. High end batteries are good for 3 to 4 years.

 

Mine took a shit at three years.
But only because I was an idiot.
I left my led chase lights on one night and got trashed and the battery was dust.
I have not replaced the battery since.
It's been 3.5yrs.
Battery still strong!

 

China? Really? In all my years with a major battery supplier and being a 2X Taco owner, I have NEVER seen a wet lead acid battery from China in a vehicle, much less a Taco. Show me I'm wrong, please.

 

Central Florida here. In my families two previous Toyota’s (2014 Sienna and 2016 Camry) both had batteries that went by year two. For the Sienna i replaced it at AutoZone and Toyota reimbursed me because of bumper to bumper warranty. On the Camry, the dealer covered it under bumper to bumper warranty.

 

I also wonder if it has something to do with where the truck is typically parked in the hottest part of the day. It gets plenty hot here in Houston, but 5 days a week, my truck is parked on the 5th floor of a 7 story parking garage. I know for sure it is a lot cooler sitting in that parking garage than it would be sitting in the sun in the middle of a black asphalt parking lot at ground level.

 

The damage usually occurs during normal operation in the summer when you are sitting in traffic with the A/C and accessories on and the under hood temps approach 200 F. The heat acts as a catalysis to the normal chemical reaction within the cells. This is especially true when people in warmer climates opt for the highest CCA battery available rather than the one that is best suited to their climate which in the case of Southern climates usually calls for a lower CCA rating and a "normal" CA rating. If the manufacturer calls for a 500 amp battery, a 900 amp battery, for example, offers no utility as the engine will only draw somewhere less than 500 amps to start.

Toyota OEM batteries are made in Mexico.

There are very few Chinese-made OEM components on Toyotas, if any, because the USA is already a tier-2 low-cost mfg country for Toyota. Tier-1 is Japan (where most Lexus models are made). Tier-2 is US/Canada. Tier-3 is Mexico. etc.

 

My stock battery died right at 4 years. I replaced it with whatever high-end stock replacement that Vato Zone carries. It’s the same battery that I put in my previous car years ago that my sister now own’s. It finally died on her after 8 years, so I hope I get that lucky with mine.

 

Yep, 2014. My original is still going in CO. Will probably replace this summer though.

 

Wtf I live in the central valley of CA with a Duralast cheap battery in my truck. We have mild winters and hot summers here (hot to me is 105+) My battery has lasted almost 4 years and still seems fine
