ever broken a bolt off?

Well last night I took my K&N intake off and while i was installing my stock airbox I was tightening down one of the bolts that hold it onto the (intake manifold?) well how do I get that shitty broken bolt out now? drill a hole into the old one and tap it out somehow?

 

they make bolt extraction kits. its like this little cone thing and you put it on a drill. they kind of suck. try a pair of pliers if there is anything for them to grip. good luck with it.

Yeah, I broke a stud on the head of my motorcycle once. I was pulling the exhaust. Sucked.

Buy an easy out kit and a few strong drill bits. Drill a small hole in the bolt and the easy outs have reverse threads. So they dig in as you turn the bolt out. Just don't break the easy out! They are much harder to remove when broken inside a broken bolt.

 

keason,, is there anything poking out? if so, go to sears and get a bolt extractor. they are designed to take out stripped nuts,,but i used the smaller one to take out an exhaust stud, that sheared. i had about 1/4" poking out..i heated it cherry red, said a prayer and used that "bolt out"..it came out!! i almost cried. tears of joy.

 

Is the broken part recessed a lot, or right at the surface? You could try using a dremel to grind a slot across the top and use a slotted screwdiver. Also wouln't hurt to use some PB blaster on it to minimize thread friction no matter what approach you use.

Alternatively, sell the truck.

 

i once broke a bolt off in an intake manifold when trying to take off the thermostat cover. had to hit a junkyard for a new intake.

but I called a budy and he has the kit to remove it so im gonna give it a shot tonight. its broken clean off, nothing sticking out.

 

I have used the easy out kit myself a few times with success. I'm sure you will get it just go slow and don't force anything.

broken flush? ouch.

easy out. drill it with the recommended sized bit. buy several quality bits (they break), and buy some drill lube. i had some that came in a tube..worked GREAT! without lube, you run the risk of breaking a drillbit IN THE BOLT, which complicates things (DRASTICALLY). i used the easy out, in one of those handles similar to a tap handle. and twisted slowly..it backed out.

i have seen a friend put the easy out - in drill and turned the chuck my hand to twist it out..he had the drill unplugged..the chuck gave him grip and leverage.

Seriously, though that bolt shouldn't be too difficult.
