It's a public street. You have no expectation of privacy. Don't need to ask permission on public property.

I've been doing street photography for a few years now and I've never had an issue. I never ask on public property, most people don't notice or mind. When I did my videography gig I'd have signed waivers through the business or venue I was shooting video at.

I don't ask people on public property, and with the way this guy was set up he was just asking for attention.

Also it's Bourbon St. in NOLA, someone probably took a picture of me.

Just like the woman next door who thought the government sent me to poison her (she smelled the fumes from my spray paint) and when I approached her about why my truck and house were covered in sillystring, she said she was going to send her helicopters after me.

I've had to do a lot of stuff like this especially when I was in school and studying photojournalism before I switched to commercial photography. Generally speaking it's always better to ask someone for their permission even though you aren't 'required' to in a public place, it's just better for everyone and usually you'll get a better photo of them if they're cooperating or at least know what you're doing. I was too afraid to ask strangers for their permission at first and got a lot of dirty WTF looks from people lol. Most folks are okay with it though if you ask them, especially people that dress crazy and do things like wear snakes on their shoulders. They want the attention anyway, but no one likes to feel like their space is being invaded without reason or permission

He's lucky he didn't get the shit kicked out of him. Guy does not look happy at all with having his pic taken. Totally agree with you though - as a rule, if I'm on the street taking people shots - I try to ask or be extremely subtle and unnoticed.

That’s just me. Don’t think people are going to beat up a big guy like me.

This was one of those moments where if I didn’t take the picture the moment would be lost.

My rule of thumb is I don’t ask because the moment will either be lost, or they will pose now that they’re aware of the camera.

A lot of photojournalists have been attacked and yelled at for that reason - sometimes in the moment you just have to go for it, act first get permission later so-to-speak. Comes with the territory. I was and still am not very good at taking photos of "regular" people, i.e. photojournalism, event photography, weddings, etc. I'm too introverted and it just weirds me out by nature which weirds the people out and you get weird photos as a result. Which is why I went the other route into commercial photography, models are easy to work with and photograph because that's their job. I have a lot of respect for photographers that get good images of people in public because it isn't always easy

I’m in a Photojournalism class right now and I’ll admit although I’m outgoing and used to talking in front of hundreds of people, I struggle just walking up to strangers and asking.

Speaking of which, I just found out one of the photos I submitted won a Photojournalism competition. One of my pictures is going on display at a San Francisco Art Gallery.
