What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Mine burnt out in the cruiser and I'm not replacing it

 

Been driving with the blue instrument cluster and HVAC for around a month... Haven't had any issues. Actually it's easier for me to see the blue than it was the orange speedo.

In 14 years of driving the truck I've hardly even noticed the green 'D'

 

In deep, crusty, solid snow they really make a difference. Especially if you chain up all four wheels. I use them regularly, like 50+ times a year. I can easily chain up all four wheels in under ten minutes. From what I could see in that video you posted, with a decent set of chains, not wimpy thin ones, you would have made it through that spot pretty easy. In the right conditions they make a huge difference, but if you rarely encounter those conditions, I agree they would not be worth carrying. Yea, they are heavy, but I carry them on the passengers side, helps correct the Taco lean.

 

When it comes to the Idler pulley OEM or general parts store? I'm wanting a spare since mine is starting to hiss a bit so the plan is to buy another one (OEM or Vatozone) install that then replace the bearing on my current one. But is OEM worth the extra $13 if it's going to need to be replaced again in a few years

 

All-Pro, the regular not Expo. I don’t have much weight in the back.

 

Just order the bearing and keep one on hand. It only takes 5 more minutes to swap the bearing out once everything else is apart.

 

Definitely hear you there, it’s another balance thing where we figure out if it’s worth another place to store shit and added weight.

This not even being the worst of the situations I got in. Several sections of trail were washed out and I kept sliding toward embankments that were 9-10 feet to a creek below. (These pics show the trouble I got into in the less scary section) In the end I needed to side winch myself foot by foot running from a tree in front, uphill, and snatch blocked back to my slider, while keeping my rear strapped to a tree to make sure the rear didn’t swing into the creek either. It worked but it was some of the most trying 2 hours of my entire wheeling career. I had an unbuilt 3rd gen with me and to get him through I basically dug out and rebuilt the trail after I saved my own ass. I’d like to think chains would have made it a little less terrifying but I would never know since I don’t have any yet. Either way it made me add both chains and traction boards to my one day wish list.

 

I have the Expos now and am using the stock shackles, used to have the stock bushings in there too but put the Daystar greasable kit in a few months ago. Anyway you should be okay

That's true, I already have the snap rig pliers. Currently looking for a PN do you happen to know either what it is or where I can look? Seems Toyota doesn't sell just the bearing

Edit: Found this And it seems like 6301 seems to be it. Anyone have any clarification on this

 

If you do, get beefy ones like these. The thin light ones are for cars driving on snow packed, paved roads. I also highly recommend ones with cam tighteners. Those are the three half moon things you can see on this set. They make it real easy to get them nice and tight.

 

My concerns with one's like that are those +35's ripping everything in my fender wells apart. I have just enough clearance to not rub fenders, and I rub the frame hard at full lock. Only can get away with it on the rear's most likely.

He's installing standard All Pro leaf springs and wanted to know if he could use his stock shackles and stock bolts, but now that I think about it I think you just put the Daystar kit on yours when you installed them iirc. Anyhow it shouldn't be an issue at least it wasn't for my Expos.

 

Pretty sure you can, but I just went and got new ones that can be greased

Can’t reuse the U-Bolts obviously, they were too short.

 

This is the bearing I put into my OEM pulley housing to use as a back-up. I am still running the one I bought from the parts store in Moab a few years ago.

I think I’ll go ahead and get another set of Daystar greasable ones for the back like you guys did . My luck I’ll have to cut off the back ones then I’d be up shits creek.

Mine were too long, I don’t recall what the length was.

Order from Wheeler’s and make sure you tell them the leaves you are using otherwise you’ll get the wrong bushings.
